Praise for SUNRISE ON THE REAPING:A New York Times Editors’ ChoiceAn Amazon Best Book of 2025 So Far“A propulsive, brutal Hunger Games prequel is here. And it’s great.” The New York Times“Yes, the new Hunger Games prequel is really that good. Everything Hunger Games fans could want and more.” USA Today“Collins is awfully good at what she does. It’s a life-giving book.” PEOPLE"Like Margaret Atwood and George Orwell before her, Collins’ novels have become part of the lexicon, an adjective — this is very Hunger Games — used to illustrate government overreach and authoritarianism. The Hunger Games series, including Sunrise on the Reaping, is a central part in the American dystopian literary canon.” MSNBC“[I]t's as if Collins is asking us to reflect on how much we really know of our history, and how much power we have in ensuring that our current truths have a place in the future.” NPR“Sunrise on the Reaping…succeeds in the near-impossible task of making a well-trod story feel as intimate and visceral as its predecessors.” ELLE“Genuinely outstanding.” Paste“Equal parts touching and deeply sad.” Teen Vogue★ “[A] brutal tale of compassion and rage, and a frank examination of propaganda and tragedy, that will satisfy longtime series fans and newcomers alike.” Publishers Weekly, Starred Review★ “Raw, shocking, and deeply bittersweet, Haymitch’s backstory pulls the pieces of the Hunger Games universe together with ease….Collins has mentioned in past interviews that she would not return to this series unless she had something to say—and she has a lot to say.” Booklist, Starred Review★ “Required reading for fans of the original trilogy. A must-have." School Library Journal, Starred Review

Reviews

tops ballad of the snakes and songbirds

"I think it’s one of the best hunger games books, definitely tops ballad of the snakes and songbirds for me and has the potential to be the best movie in the franchise. I really hope we get a book on the heavensbees family next, it’d be really interesting to see what peaked their interest in any sort of rebellion as rich capitol citizens."

Sivan (5/5)

Fantastic writing and a well crafted plot

"The writing kept me in suspense the entire read. What a well crafted story. I didn't think I would be interested in a ""book about Chinese gangs"", but everything is so intricately woven together with fantastic writing and an absolutely gripping plot. Beneath it all is a longing and love you want to invest in because it's believable and makes you feel things. I need to read everything this woman writes."

Shopper (5/5)

Amazing Design!

"I bought this collector's edition book about 3 months ago, and it's just so stunning. I wish all 4 other books had collector's edition covers like this to keep with the tradition because I would've 100% spent money on those as well. As for the story itself, it has barely taken over Catching Fire as my favorite book of the 5-book series. There are funny moments to make up for the overlapping tragedy after tragedy in almost every chapter, and yes, I do mean anything that comes out of Maysilee's mouth about makes up for the tears of sadness that you WILL shed."

Amazing book! Must read!

"Amazing book. Couldnt put it down. The plot was well thought out and I love how the characters developed throughout the story. I came out of it really loving the world that the author had created. Can't wait to read more from them"

Gaby (5/5)

Good way to end the series

"Must read to finish off the whole series. I love Haymitch as a character and really brings his whole character together after reading this."

Danayre (5/5)

Addicting book and series!

"I loved this book and the series! I will continue to read anything that the author publishes."

Haymitch’s Story

"Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins - aka Haymitch’s story. This book was everything I needed and want it to be. I will admit that I was very hesitant to go into it because of how I felt about Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but this one reads exactly like the original Hunger Games. Both equally fierce, determined and heartbreaking, this book really dives into why Haymitch is the way that he is. It was a love-hate relationship being back in the middle of the Hunger Games, but it was so interesting and revealing to see all of our most loved (and hated) side characters and how they came to be in the Hunger Games we know and love. Hands down this was my favourite book read in January and I absolutely cannot wait for the movie to come out."

Alexatthelake (5/5)

Worth it!

"I haven’t read a physical book in ages and reading this brings back my love of it. I loved the hunger game when it came out, and this book definitely feels like a grown version of that."

Robin (5/5)

Another good one

"Another good book in the series. Ballads is still my favourite, but it was cool to read Haymitch’s backstory!"
