A worthwhile read

"Great book for book clubs. Lots of questions to address. It’s a little out there, with a talking goose and all. The protagonist seems very kind, but is she? Her mother seems very self-absorbed, but is she. All in all I found it an enjoyable read, and I’m working on a second read to see what I missed."

Not good

"I couldn’t get into this book. I didn’t even finish it and returned it to the store. The fantasy world was too much like reality so it doesn’t really count as fantasy. I got about a quarter of the way in and quit."

Something a little different!

"This is a strange tale of a young teen girl who has been sent away by her mother (a famous writer) to stay safe during a war and is now on her own. Together with a 'talking' goose, they roam the country. It is a book that is quirky, tragic, humorous, feminist and thought provoking. I enjoyed it, but did find it a bit odd for my tastes, although I suspect it really needs to be read more than once. It is for the literary reader or those who like something different. 3. 5/5 stars"

The Capital of Dreams by Heather O'Neil

"Loving this book so far. A great read. Heard about it on CBC where it was also praised and convinced me to purchase it. Not disappointed."

Karen M. (5/5)

Loved!!

"Modern dark fairy tale. . . at a point about 3/4 through it almost lost me, so glad I stayed for the ending because wow. It became a book that has sat with me and one of my fave reads of 2024! #IndigoEmployee"

She finds love.

"A wonderful Montreal voice in Canadian literature."

Heather O'Neill it's always unique

"The book dawdled bit which I think was the point but made it hard to continue to pick up"

Rain (3/5)

Dreaming of more

"I am a huge fan of HeatherO’Neill. And, while the writing in this latest novel is exquisite (as usual), the story did not engage me. I guess fairy tales are not my thing."

"The Capital of Dreams showcases the award-winning O’Neill’s facility with world building, magic realism, whimsy-meets-grit and wisdom about the tender cusp of girlhood to adulthood that is shaped by external, often violent circumstances informed by systems of class and gender. . . .Mythic and prescient, The Capital of Dreams describes and becomes an alluring folktale of our time." - Winnipeg Free Press

"A harrowing and all too timely account." - The Literary Review of Canada

The Capital of Dreams unfolds like a fairy tale – magical and brutal, haunting and searing – that transports the reader to an extraordinary place that is also rooted in the very real consequences of conflict. . . .O’Neill elegantly tackles intimate, complex questions about maternal devotion, freedom, individuality, creativity, and sexuality."  - Quill & Quire (starred review)

“A haunting fantasy . . . O’Neill masterfully blends moments of whimsy with the grim realities of war, exploring themes of art, loyalty, and the complexities of mother-daughter relationships. The lush prose and fantastical elements draw readers into a magical and heartbreaking world. Like the best fairy tales, the result feels both timeless and painfully relevant.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“The novel is told in fairy tale cadence and peppered with sophisticated animals, sensitive objects, and the enduring magic of folklore forests; its raw power lies in the way it blends the realities of war with the equally trenchant realities of its child narrator’s perspective as she navigates her suddenly irredeemable world….A powerful novel—heartbreaking, magical, and real.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"The Capital of Dreams is not so much a novel to read but one to live (and dream) in. A dark, wistfully comic fable that's as imaginative as it is poignant. An entire world that only Heather O'Neill could create." - Iain Reid, bestselling author of Foe and We Spread

"The Capital of Dreams is a feminist adventure with all of the darkness of a war novel, the charm of a fairy tale, and the heart of a coming-of-age story. O’Neill’s crystal-clear, aphoristic prose reveals complex themes about freedom, desire, and destiny. I underlined passages with one hand and turned pages with the other, rapt right through the stunning final twist." - Maria Adelmann, author of How to Be Eaten

“Uncommonly poetic, nuanced and insightful, The Capital of Dreams is a masterpiece of the tangled threads and beating hearts that make us both ordinarily human and extraordinarily magical. I wish every girl could replace her mirror with pages of O’Neill’s work, to see herself as a fierce and lusty creature well-placed to weave new worlds. The Capital of Dreams will make you grateful you wandered up a dark path and tumbled down a rabbit hole.” - Cherie Dimaline, author of VenCo and Empire of Wild
