Reviews

Beautifully written!

"This beautifully written and powerful novel is told through a series of letters. It features Sylvia, a woman in the winter of her life, who lives with regret, but finds a way to both forgive herself, reach out to others, and enjoy life. It is at times humorous and at times heartbreaking, but always thoughtful. There are also numerous literary references which add to the charm of the book. I really enjoyed it. 4. 75/5 stars!"

An incredible read

"As a retired !ndigo employee, I have managed to burn through my long-term service award. Keeping a reading list of award winners, I have wiled away the midnight hours with The Correspondent by my bedside. I read how the author; Virginia Evans wrote her epic in the closet. Talk about your oxymoron as the character Sybil splays it all out there along her windowseat writing desk on cream vellum"

Really good

"Wasn't sure I'd like a book written like this, but it is so very well done. An excellent, enjoyable read."

Such a heartwarming story!

"This was a beautiful story that explored both the necessity and difficulty of reflecting on one’s life and embracing change at any stage! Sybil Van Antwerp is an older woman whose deep love of literature and writing has led her to a lifetime of handwritten letters—including one anonymous letter she has worked on for years but never sent. As she sends notes to her kids, her brother, her best friend, and her neighbours, Sybil reflects on her full life, the lessons she’s learned, and the regrets she still carries. Perhaps it’s finally time to finish that unsent letter and embrace peace. I loved the way this story was told entirely through correspondence - it was such a creative and intimate way to capture Sybil’s voice. Despite her blunt and stubborn nature, she was incredibly lovable, and I found the story both heartwarming and thought-provoking. If you enjoy a sentimental, creative, and reflective literary fiction, this book is for you!"

Fantastic book

"The Correspondent by Virginia Evans is in my top two books I read in 2025 (alongside The Great Believers). It was fantastic - a quick read, wonderful rich characters. Sybil Van Antwerp reminds me a little of Olive Kitteridge - flawed, three-dimensional, and someone I empathized with completely"

“The Correspondent” an amazing read!

"I absolutely loved “The Correspondent”! The story drew me in right from the start, but what really stood out to me was the unique format-I’ve always loved receiving cards and letters in the mail, and this book captured that feeling perfectly. It felt so personal and intimate as if I was part of the correspondence myself. The writing was heartfelt, the characters were genuine, and the emotions felt real. It’s one of the books that stays with you long after you finished it."

Amazing!

"An excellent book with a unique and fascinating concept. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end."

I love an older

"I love an older character being reflected so intimately. The plot is strong with clues imbedded in the letters she writes and receives - from some very unexpected sources! And I love a story conveyed in written correspondence: e. g. Daddy Long-Legs, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society."

Incredible

"Fantastic book, looking forward to re-reading it one day!"

Murray S. (5/5)

Easy read but not memorable

"It is a sweet story but the characters lack development."

“Subtly told and finely made, The Correspondent is a portrait of a small life expanding. Virginia Evans shows how one woman changes at a point when change had seemed impossible. That change, like this novel, turns out to be a cause for celebration.”—Ann Patchett

The Correspondent is at turns amusing and, poignant and ultimately, a pleasure to read. This moving novel unfurls its truths one letter at a time, filling in a complex and memorable picture of one woman’s life. Like a handwritten letter at its best, The Correspondent is meant to be savored.”—Charmaine Wilkerson, New York Times bestselling author of Black Cake

“This novel is a complete and utter joy.”—Ann Napolitano

“Evans’s enchanting epistolary novel revolves around prickly septuagenarian Sybil Van Antwerp . . . [with] a dash of mystery that keeps the pages flying.”The Washington Post

“The word-of-mouth bestseller of 2025 might be this quietly dazzling epistolary novel, which calls to mind Susie Boyt’s ‘Loved and Missed,’ another book that was passed around like a beloved recipe. . . . Note by note, Sybil’s world takes shape, raising poignant, timely questions about mercy and how we’re all connected.”The New York Times, “Book of the Week”

“The charming debut from Evans takes the form of letters and emails exchanged by a divorced and retired woman with her friends, family, foes, and literary idols. . . . the detailed connections between each character are brilliantly mapped through the correspondence. It adds up to an appealing family drama.”Publishers Weekly

“The circus of beautifully drawn characters, who receive and respond to Sybil’s letters, is vibrant and rich. Sybil has survived trauma, grief, and lost love. The letters are so deliciously crafted, Sybil’s life itself becomes a work of art.”—Adriana Trigiani, bestselling author of The Good Left Undone

“I finished this wonderful, wonderful book in tears, and had to take a moment—several moments—to pull myself together. . . . Equal parts sorrow and quiet joy, the stuff of life, it will make you laugh, it will make you cry, it will make you reflect, as all the best novels do.”—Fran Littlewood, New York Times bestselling author of Amazing Grace Adams

“I can’t praise it enough. Sybil is such a wonderful character, and the supporting cast so vivid and real. For a book about grief and regret it was also properly funny. It’s an absolute triumph.”—Clare Chambers, bestselling author of Small Pleasures and Shy Creatures

“Thank you, Virginia Evans, for a life beautifully told in letters, for creating a character whose mind struggles with her heart in a most intriguing, sympathetic, witty, and binge-worthy way.”—Elinor Lipman, author of Ms. Demeanor

The Correspondent is the rarest of debuts with not a misplaced word or beat missed. Moving, funny and exquisite, it is a masterpiece in human frailty.”—Anne Griffin, #1 Irish bestselling author of When All Is Said

“What a lovely novel, I fell in love with the eloquent, stubborn Sybil, such a wonderful character.”—Margot Livesey, New York Times bestselling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy and The Road from Belhaven

“Charming, engrossing, and deeply moving, Evans’s novel explores the way everyday choices and relationships shape a life and shows it’s never too late to form new connections, make amends, or even fall in love.”—Booklist
