This book deserves more hype

"I bought this looking for a light one book read to re-ignite my reading binge. . . it was exactly what I needed. A shorter read (then other books I've been reading which are 600+ pages), but still fast paced, funny, unpredictable, and just well-rounded. Honestly, for someone looking for only a novel, I'm bummed it's not a series with the main character, Hu. I don't know how more people have not left similar reviews. . . reading books like this is meant to be fun, and that's exactly what this is!"

Thoughts about the plot

"I honestly didn’t expect the plot. At first, I thought I can already guess who killed the Tucker not until the plot went 180. It completely shocked me."

Funny light read

"I love mysteries/thrillers but sometimes you need something lighter but still want to figure who did it! This book is it!"

Not quite the quirky mystery I was hoping for

"⭐️⭐️ I had high hopes for The Ex-Girlfriend Murder Club. The concept was clever, the cover immediately eye-catching, and the synopsis promised a fast-paced, fun twist on the murder mystery genre. But sadly, the execution just didn’t live up to the potential. Gloria Chao kicks off her Hu Done It series with a story about three women—Kat, Olivia, and Elle—who discover they’ve all been dating the same man. After a wildly fast friendship forms between them, they set out to get revenge… until he turns up dead. What follows is a chaotic scramble to clear their names, filled with podcast drama, romantic tension, and a plot that teeters more toward exaggerated comedy than mystery. There were parts of this I enjoyed: the pacing is quick, and there are moments of light humor and female camaraderie that kept me from giving up entirely. The final twist was genuinely fun, even if the ending itself was too abrupt and ridiculous. And I appreciated the idea of women banding together over betrayal—even if the way it played out didn’t quite ring true. But overall, the tone felt off. The writing leaned juvenile and overly metaphorical, and the characters were hard to connect with. Kat was frustrating as a lead. Olivia felt more caricature than character. Elle had potential, but even she didn’t feel fully grounded. And the podcast subplot? Distracting, at best. The romance subplot? Completely unnecessary. This is one of those books I could see working for someone who wants a breezy, low-commitment read that’s more “rom-com with a body count” than mystery or thriller. But for me, the characters, pacing, and tone just didn’t come together in a satisfying way. I listened to the audiobook version, and while narrator Carolyn Kang did a decent job distinguishing the women, the delivery sometimes missed the emotional mark. Not a favourite for me, but it may land better with readers looking for a quirky, brain-off mystery with big personalities and light chaos. **Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Audio for the advance audiobook copy in exchange for an honest review. **"

Murder, mayhem & she-nanigans

"Kat, Elle and Olivia are an unlikely trio of women who are linked to one man and find themselves in the middle of his murder investigation. Fearing they'll be the target of the police; they cover up the murder of their ex and band together to solve the crime while also trying to stay off the radar of an overzealous podcaster who is also out to solve the murder - truth be damned! This was a good debut that has some outlandish bits, a trickle of humour (not laugh-out-loud for me), some (unnecessary) romance and Insta-Friendship between the trio. I enjoyed the focus on female friendship and the word nerd in me enjoyed learning the etymology of various idioms that are liberally sprinkled throughout the story. And while their cover-up was really gross and immature, go into this mystery expecting a fun and farcical Stephanie Plum meets Dial A For Aunties kind of murder mystery with lots of she-nanigans. This is a light-hearted mystery with murder, chaos, girl power and lots of mayhem with an ending that I didn't see coming."
