An instant USA Today bestseller!
From the USA Today bestselling author of The Book Eaters comes The Girl with a Thousand Faces, a stunning Gothic tale set in a historical Hong Kong that meshes ancient myths and local legends into a haunting story of ghosts, grief, and women who will not forgive.
When Mercy Chan washes up on the shores of Hong Kong with no family, no money, and no memories, the only refuge she finds is the infamous, ghost-infested slum of Kowloon Walled City. Since then, she has rebuilt her life, working for the local triad as a ghost talker and dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt the district. The filthy gutters and cramped alleyways of Kowloon have become her home.
But the past Mercy can’t remember isn't done with her. An unusually powerful ghost has infested Kowloon’s waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district. It claims to know Mercy—and secrets from her past that are best left forgotten.
As Mercy is drawn into a deadly cat-and-mouse game with this malignant spirit, she begins to realize that the monster she fights within these walls may well be one of her own making.
"The Girl With a Thousand Faces confirms Sunyi Dean as one of the most interesting voices in genre fiction.”—Gareth Brown, USA Today bestselling author of The Book of Doors
Ghosts and a Great FMC
"Thank you to Tor Books and Macmillan Audio for the copies of The Girl with a Thousand Faces! Here are my thoughts. Decades ago, Mercy Chan washed up on the shore of Hong Kong by the Kowloon Walled City, known for its ghost infestation. She worked hard to establish herself in the slum and is now one of the most requested ghost talkers in the area. She can’t remember her past, but pieces of it seem to be popping up. A new ghost is wreaking havoc on the town, drowning innocents and causing other disturbances. Can Mercy help sort out what this ghost wants, or is it somehow linked to her mysterious past? First things first with this book, the starting chapter is flawless. It’s been a while since I started a book and was like “holy cow I’m 100% in”. I was so immersed in the world, the characters and all the action like right off the hop. This is a part I listened to (I both read and listened to this novel), and Natalie Naudus nailed it. Now as the story unfolds it gets complicated. I’m pretty sure if I were to do a reread of this novel I would pick up new things. It’s the kind of book with so much depth that you will glean something different from it each time you read. Now I find this works super well in this historical, fantasy, horror genre blend that has been popular lately. It really works and gives the plot so much dimension. Mercy is a memorable character. I always love when our FMC isn’t a 21-year-old trying to find their way in the world but is an older woman who has been through it and is showing the readers what the world has created. Mercy is that. She is strong, stubborn and here to help chat with some ghosts. I haven’t read The Book Eaters yet, but after finishing The Girl with a Thousand Faces it is making a large leap to the top of my TBR! Sunyi Dean has a new forever fan!"
