Praise for The Housekeepers

Named a Best Book of Summer by The Washington Post * Good Housekeeping * Harper's Bazaar * Reader's Digest

“Rollicking fun and entirely original... Anyone who relishes a good party gone wrong will devour this.”
—Sarah Penner, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost Apothecary

“A treasure trove of contradictions: fast-paced but thoughtful, vengeful but compassionate, satisfying but completely unpredictable. Alex Hay has written a deliciously clever novel... You’ll never have so much fun cheering on grand larceny.”
—Nina de Gramont, New York Times bestselling author of The Christie Affair, a Reese’s Book Club Pick

“Hay brings a lively tempo and an elegant wit to this zippy thriller that is also a social commentary on the plight of the powerless.”
The Washington Post

“If Ocean’s 8 took place at a Bridgerton ball instead of the Met Gala, you’d have The Housekeepers.”
—PopSugar

“[A] glittering debut...The ensemble cast is a delight of this delicious, Downton Abbey-like tale of the reversal of fortunes.”
ShelfAwareness

“[A] quick-fire, almost whimsical story of class and privilege, of low and high society….  mischievous, suspenseful and just plain fun from start to finish.”
BookPage (Starred Review)

“A glamourous, fast-paced historical heist novel that kept me hooked ’til the last page. The strong, determined and memorable female characters pull you into their web of intrigue—it’s so much fun!”
—Jennifer Saint, author of Ariadne

“Fun, fast-paced, and totally immersive, The Housekeepers is a rare jewel worth coveting. Sensational!”
—Emma Stonex, author of The Lamplighters

“Imagine Ocean’s 8 had an illegitimate baby with Fingersmith—a big fat diamond of a book, sharp and shiny, joyful and generous, intricately plotted and featuring an ingenious use for a trapeze.”
—Erin Kelly, author of He Said/She Said

“[A] glittering debut…. This lighthearted romp is a treat.”
Publishers Weekly

“This wonderfully inventive story paints an authentic portrait of London society in the early 1900s and is full of shocking secrets, suspense, hidden identities, flamboyant characters, and subtle humor… Fans of historical fiction, strong female characters, and twisty, pacy thrillers will love it.”
Booklist

“Alex Hay’s fun, fast-paced debut is shot through with themes of power and class... If you enjoyed Oceans 11 or any of the films that followed, you’re going to want to snap this one up.”
Reader’s Digest

“The heist novel may be almost as difficult to plot successfully as to pull off in real life. “The Housekeepers,” by Alex Hay, gives the genre a delicious twist.”
Christian Science Monitor

Intriguing and entertaining, a good read.

"Very engaging, this book drew me in and had me captivated from the beginning. I can't wait to see how it ends!"

3. 5/5 Stars. . . Just a Little Something Lacking

"The premise of the story is very intriguing and very much reminded me of Ocean's 8. It is set in 1905, but the world building leaves a bit lacking to set that stage and it could very well be set in more modern times. I liked most of the characters, but it felt like there was supposed to be more to the story that was edited out and the ending made me crave more. I could imagine there being a sequel to illuminate the loose ends and introduce a new ""heist"". I wish there had been a bit more about the heist and a little less irrelevant backstop. I was also hoping for a bit more description of the characters, so that I could clearly visualize each one in my mind's eye. There could have been plot reasons for that, such as obscuring character relationships, but I would have appreciated the extra details. Some elements of the plot were also very vaguely exposed and there at times seemed to be little reason for each character's choice of action or inaction. The conclusion of the heist seemed forced, like the author didn't quite know how to go for an explosive ending, or how to neatly tie things up, either. I am betting on a sequel, which I would read. It definitely was enjoyable and had promise. I kept reading it for hours on end, so obviously, it was an entertaining and intriguing story. The writing itself was also good. _x000D_ _x000D_ Overall, I recommend reading the Housekeepers, but it did not live up to jacket description, in my opinion."

Fun, courageous heist story

"This was incredible and exactly the kind of heist story I wanted. So impressed by this debut. _x000D_ _x000D_ I was very ready for a fun heist book but this curious and conniving cast of characters and the intricacies and nuance in the plot, not only in terms of the heist details but the wider personal and societal issues as well, were so beyond my expectations. _x000D_ _x000D_ Surprisingly, this book only really takes place over one month but so much happens and you get immediately sucked into it. I could feel the danger each character was up against and the author keeps us guessing as each of these characters are hiding bits of their backstory and motivation so we only get the whole story nearer to the end."

Fun read

"The Housekeepers is a fun read that will have you laughing out loud and cheering on the group of women who are simply the best at planning the heist of the century. _x000D_ _x000D_ Mrs King having been let go as Housekeeper has come up with the brilliant plan to strip the grandest home in Mayfair. _x000D_ _x000D_ There is quite a cast of characters and I loved everyone of them. _x000D_ _x000D_ Twists and turns keep those pages turning. _x000D_ _x000D_ Bookclubs will love The Housekeepers and I recommend highly you get your copy and settle in for a delightful read. _x000D_ _x000D_ Alex Hay you have a new fan and I cant wait to see where you take us next."
