An inventive saga and a curse to break

"Book review: 3. 5/5 ⭐️ Genre: high fantasy Themes: medieval folklore, fated lovers, queer romance, history On an island where inked stories determine reality, the fate of a nation depends on who controls the archives and the stories within. Here the knight and the witch are fated to fall in love and then kill each other over and over endlessly through time. Will the heroes of this story fall back into the pattern of this eternal tale or will they challenge the monarchy and rewrite their own stories? Incarnate witch Simran happens upon knight Vina by chance. When Simran is attacked by a mysterious assassin who is impervious to her magic and seemingly to death, she discovers a larger plot is afoot. When the assassin kidnaps her closest friend, she must work with the knight to kill the assassin and find the truth. Vina is loyal to a fault and is used to be an agent of the queen where duty always comes first and it becomes her guiding light. Both are fated to die and thus keep others at arms length, but they will not be able to avoid the undeniable pull to each other. As a true connection forms between Simran and Vina, they will seek to break the cycle and write their own story. In theory, there is a lot that appeals to be here and I really wanted to love it. In actuality, I struggled with the world building and magical system. I couldn’t really recognize this as being a representation of England, nor did I understand why these incarnates had to die for the island or the inked story tie in. Seeing as this was a central focus of the book, the burning questions I had distracted me. I also thought the romance could have used a bit more build up, especially when they started to experience memories of previous iterations. Even if I didn’t understand all the concepts, the lady knights, hidden forest libraries, witches and breaking the cycle to write your own story were all interesting. Shattering a world trapped in the past had parallels to colonial history and how it was easily redacted or written by those in power, while others were doomed to pay the price was an excellent social commentary. There were a lot of elements that worked and it was moody and classically romantic. It is beautifully written with an original concept, so despite general confusion, I did enjoy this fantastical tale. 🎧 Thank you to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for the ALC. The narrator had a very soothing voice with a seamless performance between characters. I think I need a reread to better understand this story, but the rendition by Shiromi Arserio was immersive and upgraded my rating."
