Praise for The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus:

“The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus
is a spellbinding debut about friendship, motherhood, first love, and the choices that bind us. Emma Knight whisks us away to Scotland, where Penelope Winters navigates her first year at Edinburgh University while untangling a family mystery. I couldn't put it down!”
—Carley Fortune, #1 New York Times bestselling author of This Summer Will Be Different and Meet Me at the Lake

“Brimming with heart, The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus is a story about parents and children, friends and lovers, and that moment when a young person must strike out on her own to claim the life she most wants. Emma Knight swept me off my feet.”
—Jenny Jackson, New York Times bestselling author of Pineapple Street

“I’m in love with this luminous debut—the charm on every page, the enthralling cast of characters, the dialogue to die for. Academia, friendship, young love and family secrets, this is as smart as it is delicious, as nostalgic as it feels fresh. I wish I could read it all over again for the first time. Emma Knight is a blazing new literary talent.”
—Ashley Audrain, #1 bestselling author of The Push and The Whispers

“Knight’s gorgeously intimate, cleverly insightful wordsmithing will certainly impress and entertain.”
—Booklist

“Wonderfully crafted, Emma Knight's story of friendship, family secrets and first love made me nostalgic about the act of reading itself. Mystery, intrigue, posh Scots and academia, it's a book to lose yourself in. Pro tip: carry it around the house, like I did, for maximum snatched read-time. A beautifully written, page-turning delight!”
—Fran Littlewood, New York Times bestselling author of Amazing Grace Adams

“Sally Rooney fans, take note! Emma Knight's witty, wistful debut will keep you up all night, pondering the mystery and romance at its core, and rooting for Knight's irresistible heroine. I loved it.”
—Joanna Rakoff, international bestselling author of My Salinger Year

“Addictive, nostalgic and comforting, this layered family mystery crept round my heart like a modern-day Dodie Smith.”
—Claire Daverley, international bestselling author of Talking at Night

“Whip smart, unrestrainedly fun, and bursting with heart, readers will fall in love with the rambling, glorious world of Talmòrach and the secretive, aristocratic family of Lord Lennox. A novel about finding ourselves, falling in love, and meeting that precious group of friends whom we call family, Knight’s debut is the modern-day Mitford novel I’ve been searching for. Joyous, clever, and wholly transportive, I loved every page!”
Katy Hays, New York Times bestselling author of The Cloisters

“Knight has crafted a tantalizing yet quietly touching debut about inheritance, emerging sexuality and what it truly means to come into one’s own.”
—New York Times Book Review

“If Knight … has one particular gift, it is the nuanced portraits she paints of these women. They glow from the page as distinct beings, fully realized in the complexity of their experiences and rendered with tenderness. You will cry with them, perhaps because you see pieces of yourself, or people you love, in their stories…. The Life Cycle of the Common Octopus is a pleasure, and one that wears its Big Important Themes – friendship, motherhood, parent-child dynamics – lightly enough that you don’t feel as if you’re mired in the emotional muck of a dreary Scottish day.”

Reviews

Slow and not very exciting

"I found this book to be very slow and a bit childish. A borderline coming of age novel with many cringy moments. While there are moments of great story telling, it's overall not great and I wouldn't recommend it."

Hatch (2/5)

À gift

"The book came highly recommended and I bought it as a gift! I’m excited to give it!"

Katie (5/5)

Academia of Scotland meets Canada

"This read got me out of a slump. It feels like it was written a long time ago, but also feels modern. It’s gloomy and light all at the same time. Academic setting, a little bit of Secret History meets Saltburn, but still nothing like it."

Emma (4/5)

A stunning debut novel

"A stunning debut novel with characters you care about and a plot that keeps you interested. About family, motherhood, friendship, the book takes you from Toronto to Edinburgh in beautiful, readable prose."

Ruth M. (5/5)

This book is on all of the """"best book lists"""" for a reason!

"I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was such a touching story and I feel it is one that will appeal to many different people and different age groups. In fact, after I read it I purchased a copy to gift to my mother because I knew she would love this book as much as I did! The sprayed edges on the Indigo exclusive version are gorgeous as well."

Junie B. (5/5)

Snooze fest

"This novel is slow and somewhat tedious. I wasn’t impressed; I don’t know how it’s a New York Times winner."

Antoinette (3/5)

A Satisfying Read

"A coming-of-age novel that can at first seem out of step with a reader who is decades older than the protagonist. But it was a welcome rekindling of first love memories, doubts and passions. It's also filled with keen observations on families, friendships and how both work when they do, and falter when they don't. I'd recommend it. Bonnie Lendrum is the author of Autumn's Grace"

Anavidreadercomments (5/5)

Disappointment

"Book was okay it was not a page turner, I expected more from the reviews I read"

Karyn (3/5)

The Life cycle of the common octopus

"So proud whenever I discover a Canadian author with true talent. Very impressed. Will be purchasing any new books Emma Knight publishes in the future."

Céline (5/5)

Can’t stop thinking about these characters

"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ariel Lawhon’s characters stay with you. It’s a fascinating story about an incredible woman well told."
