LONGLISTED FOR CANADA READS 2025 | Shortlisted for the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize
For fans of Emily St. John Mandel, David Mitchell, and Kazuo Ishiguro, an exquisite literary speculative novel set in an unnamed valley, where bereaved residents can petition to cross a forbidden border to see their lost loved ones again.
Sixteen-year-old Odile Ozanne is an awkward, quiet girl, vying for a coveted seat on the Conseil. If she earns the position, she’ll decree who among the town’s residents may be escorted deep into the woods, who may cross the border’s barbed wire fence, who may make the arduous trek to descend into the next valley over. It’s the same valley, the same town. But to the east, the town is twenty years ahead in time. To the west, it’s twenty years behind. The only border crossings permitted by the Conseil are mourning tours: furtive viewings of the dead in towns where the dead are still alive.
When Odile recognizes two mourners she wasn’t supposed to see, she realizes that the parents of her classmate Edme have crossed the border from the future to see their son while he’s still alive in Odile’s present. Edme—who is brilliant and funny, and the only person to truly know Odile—is about to die. Sworn to secrecy by the Conseil so as not to disrupt the course of nature, Odile finds herself drawing closer to her doomed friend—imperiling her own future.
Masterful and original, The Other Valley is an affecting modern fable about the inevitable march of time and whether or not fate can be defied. Above all, it is about love and letting go, and the bonds, in both life and death, that never break.

“Scott Alexander Howard takes an ingenious conceit and wraps it in a story of teenaged love to explore eternal questions about second chances and predestination. . . . [S]ensitively written, propulsively plotted, and unforgettable.” — KEVIN CHONG, Scotiabank Giller Prize finalist and author of The Double Life of Benson Yu
"Was a bit slow moving a the beginning but built a neat world where the ability to visit 20 years into the past or future exists."
— Tara K. (4/5)

Time Travel
"Slow start but worth the read. Interesting and thought provoking."
— Rina (5/5)
Interesting premise
"As long as you can suspend your logical mind this is an interesting premise for a story with more than one moral dilemmas."
— Linda (4/5)
FIVE STARS
"This book was a 5 star read for me. Such a beautiful, introspective story."
— Jaqnielsen (5/5)
Entrecroisement du passé et présent
"Bien, malgré que le livre ne va pas dans la direction imaginé. Bonne histoire et idée intrigante."
— Migriv (3/5)
Boring, no dialogue.
"I lasted 80 pages. It was a long boring read, the writing style made it hard to get into the story. No dialogue between characters. I kept waiting for something to happen in the story line, it moved so slowly. It seemed like it was written by a high school kid. One of the worst books I've read."
— Love L. (1/5)
Thought Provoking!
"This story was quite original and a times a tad confusing, but I really enjoyed it. I found it to be both sad and incredibly thought provoking. The author has created this interesting world where the valley to either side holds the same world 20 years earlier or later. Managing such a society, where someone can change the present if they were allowed to go back, results in a complex set of morality issues. This story will stay with me. Thank you to Edelweiss+ for the digital advance reading copy. 4/5 stars!"

Expecting More
"I was looking forward to reading this but I found it a bit slow and I never became very invested in the characters or the story. The last twenty pages or so were interesting but that wasn’t enough to make this a worthwhile read."
— Jayne (3/5)
