Reviews

The title is revealing as to what awaits the readers in the end.

"I believe Corby was a victim and suffered so much with the accidentally death of his child and he also endured suffering in prison. I would have expected the ending to be different and didn't like how it ended."

Get ready for a book hangover

"I’ve read several of Wally Lamb’s books but this one hits differently. It’s not an easy read but it’s a highly impactful read. I found myself anxious to get back to the story… that’s always a sign. Your feelings for Corby will fluctuate… greatly. For me it was a reminder of the fragility of life and the choices me make. You won’t regret this one. Buckle up and enjoy."

Could not put this book down!

"This is the best read I have had in ages! I was even getting up early before work so I could read ! Highly recommend. Gripping and thought provoking ! Well written!"

Karen M. (5/5)

Heartfelt and true to life story

"The story is heartbreaking and finishes with an unexpected ending. It's not what was anticipated. Although the setting is realistic and true to life, the only negative comment is the overuse of foul language, which could have been reduced. Otherwise the story held my interest and pulled at the heartstrings."

Patricia (4/5)

A story of compassion and humanity

"The book starts with the shocking and heartbreaking death of a young child, The central character, who we want to despise, is revealed and somehow redeemed in a journey of self realization while he is in the prison system. Layer by layer Lamb peels back Corby's true nature and our understanding of him, and attitude toward him, metamorphizes. Lamb invites us to consider the meaning of contrition and what it is to be human. His writing always invites a shift in conventional attitudes toward tough topics - mental health, addiction, relationships and what true compassion looks like."

The River Is Waiting

"I had me shocked after the first chapter. You can't stop reading after that. Wally Lamb is an exceptional author."

Colleen W. (5/5)

Great fall read if you’re looking for a book with substance to it

"I enjoyed this book, and I read it in almost one sitting. It is a darker story, and I found the enfing to be a bit rushed, completely unexpected though! I would recommend it as the writing is fantastic and characters pull you in."

Hope, Trauma, and the River That Carries Them

"This book had me completely engrossed from page one. The first chapter is intense, even traumatic, but trust me it is worth continuing. Wally Lamb pulls you into a layered, emotional, and entirely original story. I’ll admit… for a while I thought I was reading a sort of Shawshank Redemption retelling. Spoiler: I was so wrong! If you’re going in with that expectation forget it! The only thing it shares with Shawshank is the theme of hope and wow, does that theme shine through (oh and a prison library). Also… why does Wally Lamb so often write about twins?? One sibling more fortunate than the other, it’s a pattern, and it always hits deep. The family dynamics, the trauma, the resilience… it’s all there, and it’s all beautifully written. Would I recommend it? 100% Yes! Especially if you’re already a Wally Lamb fan. This one will stay with me for a long time."

Random M. (5/5)

Bittersweet story with that leaves you contemplating about every day decisions.

"This is one of my top 5 books! Perhaps this is because I’m a big fan of Wally Lamb, who does not do enough writing! However, I do wish that the accident that shaped his life was a little less tragic and heart wrenching. It was painful to read. That being said, it was a book that is filled with redemption and perhaps a huge alert to the danger of driving when children are in the picture."

Lucy B. (5/5)

Emotionally exhausting read

"I really wasn’t sure I could keep going after the first chapter. It’s such an awful situation that Corby creates for himself, but I became completely immersed in the character and could not stop reading. I wonder if a male reader would identify with Corby more strongly, or maybe my own experiences with poor choices and failure contributed, or maybe it has to do with someone’s ability to feel empathy? Either way, it’s not an easy read. I really did love the book, but I also felt trauma after reading it, and so can only say that if you are already dealing pain or loss in your life you might want to avoid this one. I wish there was another version that ended differently."

"Wally Lamb has always written with compassion for all of his characters, no matter their flaws. But here, in this moving exploration of an otherwise good man and loving father who happens to be an addict, Lamb goes deeply into what it means not only to survive tragedy, but to actually heal from it by stepping tentatively into real forgiveness. I could not put down The River is Waiting, and I predict that you won't be able to either.” —Andre Dubus III, New York Times bestselling author of House of Sand and Fog and Ghost Dogs
