“‘At the heart of every empire is a good pirate story,’ writes Timothy Romans, author of this new book, which does not disappoint. By looking at Tokugawa Japan from the perspective of a family of merchant-pirates from Nagasaki, he opens a window onto a fascinating period, showing how the family maneuvered between the Dutch, the Chinese, the Portuguese, and various interests within Japan to build a fortune rivaling that of the shogun himself. A gripping read that is also serious, archivally based history.”—Tonio Andrade, Emory University
