Excerpt from The Speech of William Wilberforce, Representative for the County of York, on Wednesday the 13th of May, 1789, on the Question of the Abolition of the Slave Trade

In opening the nature of the slave'trade, I need only obferve, that it is found, by ex perience, to be juft fuch as every man, who ufes his reafon, would infallibly conclude It to be. For my own part, fo clearly am I convinced of the mifchiefs infeparable from it, that l {hould hardly want any fur ther evidence than my own mind would fur nifh, by the molt fimple deductions. Fadis, however, are now laid before the Houfe. A report has been made by his Majefiy's Privy Council, which, Itruf't, ev'ery Gentleman has read, and which afcertains the Slave Trade to be jufl fuch in practice as We know.
