The Three Witty Goats Gruff is a wonderful variation of the popular classic Three Billy Goats Gruff-but better. Although the premise is similar - to get three goats over the bridge to eat the grass on the other side without being eaten by the troll - that's where the similarity ends. Author Lora Rozler has removed the violent ending of pushing the troll off the bridge and added a witty plan to get all three goats over the bridge without resorting to violence. You'll have to read the book to find out how the goats outwit the troll. This delightful story also added a strong female character to provide a role model for girls. Children enjoy repetition and sound effects like "trip trap trip trap" when a goat walks over the bridge. Teachers and parents will love the subtleties of problem solving, teamwork, preparing a plan, and measuring: each goat is bigger than the one before. The artwork in The Three Witty Goats Gruff is very well done and invites the young reader into the story. Illustrator Hoan Vu has created full-color images to display emotion and truly enhance the book. I highly recommend this colorful, witty tale. Every public library, school library and home library should add this wonderful story to their collection because it's sure to become a classic!Reviewed by Barbara Fanson for Readers' Favorite
