The title really draws you in!

"A gripping novel, which really gave insight into the treatment of Asian people in our country… Every page had at least one brilliant sentence that was fresh and evocative. The reader was really able to emphasize with the protagonist and the situations the relationships were clearly outlined. The whole book was compelling in a way that it’s hard to put it down. Good work!"

Brilliantly captures the complex trauma of being 'othered' as both queer and foreign, in what is supposed to be your home

"This book brilliantly captures the complex experience children of immigrant parents undergo, growing up in a land not their own. The hazing of an adolescence in a minority, and the impact of being 'othered' twice over (being foreign PLUS being queer), is a powerful but sadly all too common experience for many of us. Illusions around what you are told to believe is your home, are slowly shattered. One cutting remark at a time, as defined by the majority, are meant to put us in our place, only to leave us feeling displaced. This book gives voice to that trauma, writing with precision around the feelings of intolerance from the outside world, blended with the rejection of growing up queer in your oen family culture that doesn't understand you. Navigating a society that is repelled by you, propels this mesmerizing tale forward. Combining elements of mystery, shame, hidden secrets, hidden identities and the possibility of reconciliation, it shines a light into the quagmire of hate, self loathing and discrimination. This is ultmately a story of the bonds that can heal a family."

Cosmonauts, Tigers, and a Twisty Plot

"From the inciting incident through to the twisty ending, I loved this book. I hope he wins the next Giller."

Poignant, immersive, and affecting!

"The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is a raw, vivid, suspenseful tale that takes you into the life of Casper Han, a young, gay man who, after his father suddenly goes missing, decides to return to his hometown to not only help find his father, but to finally discover what really happened to his twin brother on that night more than twenty years ago when he vanished without a trace. The prose is eloquent and expressive. The characters are sorrowful, secretive, and strong. And the plot is an exceptionally tender tale about life, loss, family, friendship, strength, abuse, loneliness, grief, self-discovery, revelations, heartache, belonging, and love. Every once in a while you pick up a book that completely moves you and surprises you in all the best ways, and The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is one of those novels. It’s a powerful, pensive, mysterious, beautifully written story by Tan where the space between the words resonates as loudly as the words themselves and is a beautiful reminder that forgiveness in all its forms is always necessary for true healing."

The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is the kind of rich literary suspense that grips your heart and your throat at once. The tenderness of childhood, the shame of long-held secrets, the pain of invisibility—these complex truths about survival, identity, and familial love are explored with nuance and care, in a haunting mystery with a walloping conclusion. Eddy Boudel Tan is a beautiful writer and an affecting storyteller.”
—Ashley Audrain, author of The Push and The Whispers

—P. J. Vernon, author of Bath Haus

“A propulsive, braided mystery that offers page-turning revelations on immigrant family relationships and how they shape, break, and reinvent us. Eddy Boudel Tan offers an incredible gem on the important truths of diasporic and queer identity, the intrusion of past secrets on the present, and the invisibility of Asian model-minorities who long to be seen in western society. He has skillfully woven together a deeply complicated and moving plot with elegant prose that will stay long with the reader. An engrossing and nuanced feat.”
—Lindsay Wong, author of Tell Me Pleasant Things about Immortality

—Farzana Doctor, author of The Beauty of Us

“Masterfully combines mystery, family drama, and the sacrifices that immigrant parents make in the hopes of giving their children a better life. At the heart of the story is a thoughtful and universal exploration of identity—not only in how we see one another, but also how we perceive ourselves. I loved this book and the world that Eddy Boudel Tan has created within its pages.”
—Brian Francis, author of Missed Connections

“Suspenseful, heartbreaking, and moving, The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is an unforgettable tale of survival, love, and courage. A magnificent achievement.”
—Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai, author of The Mountains Sing and Dust Child

“Every page leaves you breathless, eager to learn more about the family and the community at the story’s centre, and before you know it you’re caught in the middle of a heart-wrenching mystery, through which the author deftly, astutely, and compassionately sheds light on family relationships where each member harbours a secret as a matter of survival, regardless of its cost to one, and even to all. Once I began reading, I couldn’t put it down.”

“A raw portrayal of a Chinese Canadian family forced to deal with skeletons in their closet. Eddy Boudel Tan writes a page-turner filled with unexpected twists and turns exposing the violence found in a ‘progressive’ BC town.”
—Christina Wong and Daniel Innes, author and illustrator of Denison Avenue

“A twisty page-turner where there's always more than meets the eye. More than a mystery, The Tiger and the Cosmonaut is about what we do to survive and what we lose in the process.
