One of the Best Books of 2026

"I love books that match my own brand of weird, so The Unravelling of Ou by Hollay Ghadery was an instant must-read for me. It quickly jumped into my top ten favourite books of all time. This quirky, highly original novel is told entirely from the perspective of a wool camp sock puppet named Ecology Paul, who serves as the emotional safety net for the main character, Minoo. While a puppet narrator sounds unusual on paper, it works beautifully and acts as a brilliant mirror for human psychology and survival. The book handles tough topics like generational trauma, exile, and deep grief with an incredible amount of tenderness and honesty. We all have our own version of a support line when life gets heavy—whether it’s a comfort movie, a video game, or a house full of pets—and Minoo’s happens to be Ecology Paul. Watching her grow, face her past, and learn to connect with her family was an absolute honor. Ghadery’s prose is poetic, wickedly funny, and deeply moving all at once. This is a healing tale that resists easy answers, and it is a book I won't be forgetting anytime soon. Highly recommend! And even better. . . Canadian author! Everyone needs to pick this book up. Honestly, it's one of the most beautiful books I've read in a while. And it also has the best cover. Five out of five stars."

Inventive and Powerful Story

"The Unravelling of Ou by Hollay Ghadery Oh my heart. This beautifully written story of Minoo lodged itself in my heart from the first chapter and stayed there until the final page. “Minoo was never so ashamed of who she was until she saw herself through the eyes of her mother. ” A loving childhood inexplicably shifts into one marked by rejection, criticism and shame when Minoo reaches puberty. All she understands is that there is something wrong - something shameful - about her body and about herself. After a teenage pregnancy, Minoo is banished to Canada to be raised by an aunt, while her parents claim her son as their own. Overwhelmed, Minoo finds solace in a sock puppet named Ecology Paul, who becomes a safe place for her most painful thoughts and feelings. Ecology Paul narrates Minoo’s life, developing into a voice that feels almost independent of her - a supportive confidant and compassionate witness. Ghadery poignantly captures Minoo’s overwhelming shame, her profound grief and abandonment and her relentless longing for even the smallest glimmer of maternal approval. The novel’s inventive narrative lends emotional depth and tenderness to the story, while also creating moments of unexpected humour that made me laugh out loud. Though the story is heartbreaking, it is also threaded with resilience, strength and curiosity, moments in which Minoo dares to engage fully with her life. At its core, the novel is a nuanced exploration of motherhood in all its contradictions: the exquisite joy of holding and snuggling your baby; the intimacy of being your Childs entire world and the painful reckoning when they discover you are only human. It acknowledges the vulnerabilities and failures of motherhood without judgement and portrays the fraught mother- daughter relationship with complexity and compassion. This is a deeply moving and emotionally immersive novel, an exploration of how people survive trauma and alienation, how they can unravel without completely breaking, and how they can slowly find their way back to themselves. Creative, inventive and impossible to put down."

“Wildly original and captivating. A phenomenal examination of female shame, sexuality, queerness, motherhood, and intimacy, Hollay Ghadery writes with sensitivity and resonating beauty through an unconventional narrator: a sock puppet, Ecology Paul, who delivers the emotional coming-of-age tale of young Minoo with whimsy and emotional depth. Minoo feels trapped in her body and guilt over its sensual pleasures, as she grapples with a complicated relationship with a traditional Iranian mother. In The Unravelling of Ou, the immigrant Canadian narrative is dismantled, and headstrong mothers and daughters clash with patriarchal structures that want to control their bodies, their vanity, and their desires. Vulnerable, brave, and heartbreaking, this powerful novel asks: how do women function in a world that is not designed to love them back? How do oppressed individuals understand and ultimately save themselves? Ghadery delivers answers in a lyrical and imaginative debut.”—Lindsay Wong, Villain Hitting for Vicious Little Nobodies
