An impressive entry into the YA fantasy scene

"Thorn Season hooked me right away. The setup—an heir hiding her forbidden magic in a kingdom that hunts her kind—was tense and addictive. The court politics, slow-burn danger, and power games felt very Throne of Glass meets Red Queen, but with its own edge. Alissa is a sharp, flawed heroine who’s easy to root for, and the story blends romance, rebellion, and magic in a way that keeps you turning pages. That said, the pacing dips a bit halfway through, when the focus shifts more toward the romance. Some readers wanted more depth in the world-building and magic system, and I get that—it’s a bit fuzzy at times. But the atmosphere, tension, and morally gray characters totally made up for it. Overall, it’s a strong debut with real potential. If you love court intrigue, secret powers, and slow-burn danger, this one’s worth picking up."

Thorn Season is an addictive mix of secrets and romance, with an intelligent and dynamic lead. Alissa goes through an incredible arc that sees her grow from a sheltered young woman to a true powerhouse of courtly intrigue. The writing is propulsive and pacy, and Azar is a truly exciting new voice in YA fantasy.
