Tiki Tim by Madison Caputi is a charming picture book that offers a fresh and whimsical take on the themes of friendship and adventure. In this vibrant story, young Kai, feeling the anxiety of being the new kid in town, finds solace in an unexpected friend-Tiki Tim, a tiki statue that magically comes to life. Together, they explore Adventure Bay, diving into exciting activities like parasailing, surfing, shark tooth hunting, and more, all while learning that it's not the activities that matter most but the friendships that blossom along the way.
Madison Caputi's debut picture book is joyful and imaginative, perfect for readers ages 3-7. The colorful illustrations by Divya George add to the lively beach atmosphere, making the story pop with energy and fun. The images don't overshadow the text, and the layout is different and quite visually pleasing. Kai's journey from feeling lonely to embracing adventure with a friend sends a comforting and positive message to young readers facing new or unfamiliar situations. It's a delightful read for any child who loves the beach, surfing, the idea of having a tiki statue as a buddy, or having difficulty making friends. It's a story about wishes coming true and finding friends where you'd least expect. Tiki Tim is a great classroom story that teaches lessons that can help children make new friends, especially if it's early in the school year or a student is new. I highly recommend Tiki Tim.

Such a magical read that is bound to capture the hearts of young readers, just as it did mine!
Many readers will likely connect with Kai's journey of relocating, a scenario that can be quite intimidating. However, this story beautifully showcases the amazing opportunities that can arise from fresh starts, inspiring young readers to embrace change and remain open to the friendships and adventures that await them. In fact, reading this tale may just be the encouragement that some children need to step beyond their comfort zones, motivating them to build friendships and engage in unfamiliar activities.
One of the most touching moments in the book is when Kai's heartfelt longing for a friend is fulfilled with Tiki Tim coming to life; their blossoming friendship serves as a wonderful reminder of the joy that comes from connecting with others and exploring new things. The Hawaiian backdrop is undoubtedly another highlight for me; the colourful illustrations radiate happiness and create a cheerful atmosphere that instils a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world, making the reading experience even more enriching.
In all, this book is a noteworthy contribution to children's literature, blending entertainment with essential lessons about the power of friendship, courage, and empathy for those who may feel out of place, all while fostering a sense of resilience and optimism in the face of uncertainty.
