James Joyce is one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century, perhaps best known for his stream-of-consciousness style displayed so brilliantly in Ulysses. He was born in Dublin on February 2, 1882. His first book, the poems of Chamber Music, was published in London in 1907 and Dubliners, a book of stories, in 1914. Italy’s entrance into the First World War obliged Joyce to leave Trieste and move to Zurich, where he remained until 1919. During this time he published A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and a play, Exiles (1918). Joyce then moved to Paris to arrange for the publication of Ulysses (1922), which brought him international fame. The same year he began work on Finnegan’s Wake, which he completed in 1939 despite physical and emotional afflictions. The Second World War forced him out of Paris, and in 1940 he managed to return to Zurich, where he died on January 13, 1941.
