Were you my Ariel is a song of life and death of a great-grandmother, mother of a prodigal daughter who returns to Egypt from Canada to tend her. The daughter´s turbulence swings from solitude to rage at her mother´s suffering; the mother´s travail alternates between pain/hope/anguish. Paradox swivels scenery from sun-drenched Egypt to destitute children living in potholes on crowded streets, among cars, buses, metros, stray cats, dogs, taxis, shops, pavements choking with goods, pollution. On Sharm El Sheik´s shores at the Red Sea, the daughter´s awareness of her dying mother´s isolation ambushes her own and her lover´s sun-intoxicated days. Mother and estranged daughter seek reprieve in memories of what should have been but was not, and they find it in an instant of recognition and reciprocated tenderness.

Soraya Erian experienced her first snowfall outside Toronto´s Queen´s Park Women´s Residence where—minus boots, coat and gloves—she raised her face to the sky and stretched her arms wide to welcome falling flakes. Since then, she has embraced this image as emblem of the seasonal bounty of the land she came to call home. She obtained her graduate degrees in English Literature, met her husband, was blessed with their daughter and son, taught College English, published six books of poetry, drawings and short stories, won poetry prizes, freelanced newspaper articles. Now with her two grandsons, she rushes out into the snow to build a bumpy snowman; alone, she writes/draws/paints, listens to icicles tinkling to the gentle ministry of snow piling upon on her window sill.
