What Is a Hypnagogic Jerk? a.k.a. Hypnic jerk or Sleep starts.
Various hypotheses have been proposed in the aetiology of hypnic jerks.
One of them states that these jerks are a natural step in the transition from alertness to sleep made via the reticular activating system, where some of the nerves of the hands and legs misfire.
Yet another theory states that it is a basic protective reflex.
Complete relaxation of the muscles is interpreted by the brain as falling and in order to prevent this the brain orders the muscle to twitch.
From a prognostic perspective, these are benign phenomena, but they need to be treated if they interfere with one's sleep.
The management includes nonpharmacological methods with most importantly psychological reassurance to the patient.
It is strived in this Booklet to learn about hypnagogic jerks, or hypnic jerks, including, the most common symptoms, and whether further evaluation and treatment may be necessary.
