This book, When the Door Opens, begins by telling you a story about a girl named Sarah. At the tender age of ten she begins to realize that her dog Buster, who is her best friend, is growing older at a much more rapid pace than she. When Buster dies Sarah does not yet realize that his spirit lives on, and she becomes very distraught. She longs to find the answers to her questions. After Buster has a little fun as a spirit, and is then "processed", he vows to come back and make Sarah happy again. When Buster is allowed to come back, he soon becomes aware that he was gone longer than he thought, so his search for Sarah is difficult.

As Sarah grows older and matures, her spiritual side awakens, and she begins to have many different kinds of experiences. The Universe speaks to her in multiple ways. Sarah receives unusual signs along the way which tell her that there is much more here than meets the eye. She begins to search for the truth in ways that most would consider to be very strange. With all of the twists and turns this book takes, Sarah is brought to the very brink of existence, and has to make an important decision; should she go back to help the others, or should she venture on to see what comes next?
