Hanna R. Neier is a former attorney, current freelance writer and editor, the daughter of Jewish immigrants and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. She was the 2025 winner of the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award, and her essays, interviews, critiques and lifestyle articles have appeared in The Jerusalem Post, POPSUGAR, Motherly, Kveller, and Lilith Magazine, among other publications. Originally from the suburbs of Boston, she now lives in Brooklyn, New York with her husband, two kids, and one indestructible sourdough starter. When You Write Back is her debut novel.

"A wondrous tale of time travel that will keep you reading till the last page. Ellie and Daniel are unforgettable pen pals you will love and root for as they bring past and present together, revealing that history is memory that is alive." —Ruth Behar, Newbery Honor-winning author of Across So Many Seas

"When Ellie, who lives in Newton, MA, starts writing to Daniel in Paris, France as part of a school assignment, she has no clue that not only are her letters crossing the ocean, they are mysteriously crossing the ordinary constraints of time. Ellie and Daniel may exist in different eras but through their letters, they form a true and lasting bond, one that brings their individual stories together in unexpected ways. Hanna Neier has written a moving, beautiful and wholly original tale, weaving past and present into a rich and seamless tapestry." —Yona Zeldis McDonough, author of The Bicycle Spy and The Doll With the Yellow Star
