Edgar Sims, a burned-out investigative journalist from Chicago, travels into the heart of the Appalachian Mountains searching for new meaning in life. While conducting folklore research on the indigenous communities, Edgar meets Old Tom Tucker.

The enigmatic hermit shares a series of bizarre and macabre stories about mysterious portals, ancient beings, and terrifying creatures that exist in the Appalachian wilderness. Tom insists his stories are true and challenges Edgar's preconceived beliefs on the nature of reality and the origins of human civilization. Tom wagers that there exists a hidden valley where Edgar will find hard evidence to support his outlandish claims—as well as untold treasure and answers to his life questions.
