Heather’s Review

This is Ann Patchett at her very best

Whistler by Ann Patchett is, like all her books, a gift; this is Patchett at the very height of her formidable storytelling powers.

Whistler starts with a chance encounter in a museum. Daphne Fuller crosses paths with the man who was her stepfather for one of the most impactful years of her life—more than four decades earlier, when she was nine.

That random meeting reignites their relationship and sparks an emotionally resonant story that looks at the moments and relationships that truly make us who we are.

Patchett's unique talent has always been her ability to craft prose that is at once immersive and deep but always somehow "quiet,” allowing the reader space to feel. This is Ann Patchett at her very best.

I wanted to stay in Ann Patchett's world

"I love Ann Patchett, and I've read all of her books. I had to stop reading Whistler midway through to pause. I told my spouse that it was so good that I needed to postpone knowing that I would be done the book eventually - I wanted to stay in her world a little longer."

A beautiful story beautifully told!

"I believe I only read this author once before (Bel Canto) and that was decades ago. But, having read rave reviews about her present novel, I decided to read it, even though I tend towards more plot-driven stories (though that has been slowly changing). This is an exquisite novel that is beautifully written and that speaks to memory, found family, second chances, and enduring connections. Told in the present with flashbacks, Daphne, 53, reconnects one day at the MET with 76-year-old Eddie, her stepfather for a short time when she was nine. With a largely absent biological father, Eddie provided Daphne with a sense of home and being seen. She blamed herself when Eddie and her mother divorced, and harboured resentment for her mother, who remains remote, and focused on her third husband and their children. The reconnection with Eddie allows Daphne and him to recall the past, their father-daughter relationship, and their enduring connection in spite of an absence of over forty years. I liked the look at memory and how people revisit their own and their families’ stories as they grow older: looking back at the past through a recalibrated lens as an adult with greater clarity, empathy and awareness (if not acceptance) of parents as people with their own stories, strengths and weaknesses. I loved this quiet story with its realistic, fleshed out characters, the gentle unfolding of secrets, and second chances. Simply beautiful storytelling. Highly recommend and will be one of my favourite reads this year."

Beautifully written

"Set against the bustling backdrop of New York City 🗽, this captivating story follows 53-year-old teacher Daphne Fuller and her husband, a retired doctor, during a beautiful date night at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 🏛️ Out of nowhere, a surprise encounter reunites Daphne with her former childhood stepfather. 👴🏼 As they take a deep dive down memory lane, long-buried questions, deep emotions, and powerful reflections on their past lives come rushing to the surface. 🌄 Fair warning: this book will absolutely have you crying over fictional characters! 😭💔 If you love books and want to join a wonderful virtual community, definitely check out the Indigo Book Club on Instagram! 🥰🎀"

My first Ann Patchett and certainly not the last

"As soon as I finished this book, I immediately called my dad to tell him I loved him. Whistler is such a beautiful novel about time, and memory, and the short but significant relationships from childhood. This was my very first Ann Patchett read and certainly not the last. All the details are so well thought of and it reminded me very much of some of my favourite Mitch Albom books. One of my favourites of the year so far! #indigoemployee"

Patchett is even more entrancing, radiant, and heart-seizing than she is in Tom Lake in this tale of complicated marriages, secret love, fear, fury, courage, and reconciliation. - Booklist (starred review)

Like many of Patchett’s works, this beautiful and generous novel feels effortless, never straining for effect. It’s one of her best. - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

An evocative and moving tribute to the death-defying, heart-opening, infinitely redemptive power of storytelling. - Kirkus (starred review)

Patchett is a clarion voice who can persuade any reader to devour her books without pause. Her latest is no exception, with strong characters, compelling circumstances, and the one detail on which lives can pivot to ruin or to happiness. Patchett devises for her characters an incident with edge-of-one’s-seat suspense in this novel overflowing with rewards for all. - Library Journal

"A modern family's platonic, later-in-life love story. . . . intimate and entertaining [with a] generous worldview." - The New York Times

"Patchett. . . has a penchant for capturing the bittersweet nuances of family and friendship with wit and candor. . . . It's a simple yet soaring tale of love, memory and one extraordinary horse." - Elle

“Ann Patchett’s new novel, Whistler, is that loveliest of summer gifts, a story of reconciliation, of old affections renewed, of a family’s circumference enlarged.” - Ron Charles

"NPR's reviewer Heller McAlpin [once] observed that [Patchett] 'may well be the most beloved book person in America.' The author...only burnishes that sterling reputation with Whistler, her finely crafted account of a reunion between daughter and stepfather." - NPR

“Ann Patchett’s new novel is a rare phenomenon in contemporary fiction: a novel both majestic and intimate, original and masterful in its structure, crystalline in its prose, revelatory in its insights, utterly devastating yet ultimately uplifting in its emotional impact. . . . I think it is her best novel yet.” - The Boston Globe
