"Ultimately this is a story about resilience and nature’s capacity for regeneration, no matter what we throw at it. It’s also about a legacy of hope in the face of overwhelming odds."
Literary Review of Canada

"Buffalo Lessons does not aspire to didacticism but to be a gift to those who come after in the same way as the buffalo are a gift to the land and the people who live here."
—Alberta Views

"Determination, wit, and humility combine in this inspiring tale of a species returned to its place in nature. Told with passionate clarity and illustrated throughout with stunning photographs, Buffalo Lessons is, quite simply, a beautiful book.”
—Thor Hanson, author of Close to Home

Karsten Heuer was a conservationist, biologist, author, and filmmaker. An early advocate of large landscape conservation, Heuer worked in the field for decades, including in Inuvik in Canada’s far north, in the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa, and in Banff National Park in the Rockies, where he led the successful bison reintroduction project. Heuer is the author of Walking the Big Wild and Being Caribou, and a recipient of the Wilburforce Foundation Conservation Leadership Award. He passed away in November 2024, shortly after completing the manuscript for Buffalo Lessons.
