"Remarkable, startling, and heartfelt...The bravery of Perry’s book is not just in what he says, or how he says it, and how unflinching he is in his commitment to say it, but that he chose to say it at all." GQ

Candid, darkly funny…starkly chronicling his decades-long cage match with drinking and drug use. Perry writes gratefully and glowingly…fans will find poignant nuggets in its pages.” The New York Times

“A heartbreakingly beautiful memoir.” People

"Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing is a raw, unflinching memoir that took courage to write. As it turns out, Matthew Perry has a lot of courage. He takes us through his addiction, his illness and his paralyzing loneliness. Somehow, during the course of his life, Matthew was able to turn his pain into comedic joy for others, but, he tells us, it was at a cost. Matthew takes us through his “hell” but doesn’t wallow. Ultimately, this book is filled with hope for the future. If you want to know about who Matthew Perry is, stay away from the rags and read this." —Marta Kauffman, co-creator of the NBC sitcom Friends

Reviews

Very interesting.

"Such a good read. I feel like I'm re-living the moments with Matthew and feeling the emotions he is along the way. Very interesting perspectives and I definitely appreciated this level of vulnerability. I'm sure those who are struggling with addiction or have loved ones who are will find comfort in this book. Or those who are just curious about how others work. Overall, wonderful. I hope Matthew is resting."

Sophie (5/5)

Title matched the stories shared.

"While I was listening to him it was like he was right in front of me."

Gordon S. (5/5)

A Page Turner

"Within the first few pages I was hooked. Matthew Perry’s voice is entrenched in your head as you read his story in his entertaining way of sharing. I haven’t finished the book yet, but I’m loving every page that I turn."

Angie (5/5)

Mildly interesting

"The storyline lacks depth although the author tries to hit it. Its hard to empathise his failings based on weak links to minor childhood events."

Dwts (4/5)

Now I Know Better

"I found Matthew Perry's story very interesting and learned a lot about addicts and their behaviour. It was eye opening to read what his thought process through his life changes phases."

Curious R. (5/5)

Comedic tragedy

"The more you read, the more you want to go back in time and turn things around for him, and yet, you smile thru his insanity, his sickness knowing what will be ."

Paul G. (5/5)

A must read for anyone who is close to another with addiction issues.

"Such a touching story. Matt wrote his story inna simple language for anyone who wishes to read it …and understand. I bought the book for some one who is a caregiver for another who suffers from addictions. ni wanted to read the memoir before passing it along."

Auntie C. (5/5)

Outstanding and Personable

"I have been a fan of the show friends for half my life now and reading this book was like reading my favourite characters portrayal of life. A perspective of “chandler bing” that I never knew existed but I’m glad I know of now. I recommend this book to just about anyone who has a special place inside for friends and the chandler bings humour."

Zoe. (5/5)

The title suits the contents of the book very much. It’s shocking to see how much pain there’s in the world and you cannot do anything or say anything to help recover those who are going through it.

"It’s very well written in terms of Mathew Perry’s language. If you’re a Friends fan, you can hear/imagine Mathew Perry talking in his funny way. You can imagine Chandler. But here, you get to know the real Mathew and see that Chandler was just a small part of his life. Mathew is much more than just Chandler. It’s heartbreaking to see our favourite comedian/actor going through so much pain."

The R. (4/5)

So powerful

"Such a great read. Has you hooked from page 1. So much that I was able to relate too. Highly recommend this to anyone."
