Beautiful story about overcoming trauma with a supernatural twist!

"I've always had a special place in my heart for Fruits Basket. I read this series when I was in high school and recently purchased this book to share with the high school kids I work with. Within the first day someone was reading it! It talks about difficult subjects thoughtfully and has an accurate portrayal of the messy emotions teenagers experience after facing or even when facing difficult situations. It's true that the supernatural elements are wild and magical and far out there, but the way the characters react are not. Tohru is the heart of the story, supporting all the characters with their struggles while also trying to deal with her own grief over her mother's death. While women and girls are often expected to take the role of emotional support, this story has a really interesting twist - partway through, Kyo and Yuki start to realize that Tohru is also fighting her own battle and become a support for her as well. The dynamic between these three becomes a lot more interesting as the story progresses - I was hooked from the start, but I feel like, even though the manga was written nearly 20 years ago now, it's aged really well and still holds the same magic."
