The 2023 Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award winning cartoonist, Zoe Thorogood (writer and artist of The Impending Blindness of Billie Scott, artist on Joe Hill's Rain graphic novelisation), records six months of her own life as it falls apart in a desperate attempt to put it back together again in the only way she knows how. It's Lonely at the Centre of the Earth is an intimate and meta-narrative look into the life of a selfish artist who must create for her own survival. A poignant and original depiction of a young woman's struggle with mental health—through the ups and downs of anxiety, depression, and imposter syndrome—as she forges a promising career in sequential art and finds herself along the way.

Did not disappoint - get yourself this book!
"Great read with incredible art work. This book made me laugh a lot more than expected, especially considering the subject matter - which Zoe approaches with such poise, but still with that sense of realness. I highly recommend this book, A+, and beyond worth it for the price."

Achingly raw
"I’ve always loved comics and personal stories - especially ones where the author’s voice shines brightly, so it’s only natural I’d fall deeply in love with this emerging category of autobiographical graphic novels/comics/manga. As a former weird kid and current aspiring artist with mental illness gifted to me by my mother, I heavily related to many aspects of Zoe’s experiences. The way she so earnestly expresses her thoughts and feelings - especially the ones pertaining to her isolation and social anxiety - were especially well-done in my opinion. This book had me laughing aloud as I binged it at 2am. I cried. I put Open Book by CAKE on my playlist. I thought about how easily I could have ended up in similar situations as Zoe had I not had the support system that I do. It was raw, emotional, cold, messy, expertly tied together, and easily became one of my favourite novels of all time."
