In this stunning historical fantasy, journey to the Victorian era, as children with mysterious powers are hunted by a figure of darkness in a battle of good vs. evil...
Charlie Ovid, despite surviving a brutal childhood in Mississippi, doesn't have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When Alice Quicke, a jaded detective with her own troubled past, is recruited to escort them to safety, all three begin a journey into the nature of difference and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous.
What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal, from the gaslit streets of London, and the wooden theaters of Meiji-era Tokyo, to an eerie estate outside Edinburgh where other children with gifts—like Komako, a witch-child and twister of dust, and Ribs, a girl who cloaks herself in invisibility—are forced to combat the forces that threaten their safety. There, the world of the dead and the world of the living threaten to collide. With this new found family, Komako, Marlowe, Charlie, Ribs, and the rest of the Talents discover the truth about their abilities. And as secrets within the Institute unfurl, a new question arises: What truly defines a monster?
Riveting in its scope, exquisitely written, Ordinary Monsters presents a catastrophic vision of the Victorian world—and of the gifted, broken children who must save it.

An Amazing Dark Victorian Fantasy!
"I picked this up on the off chance just from the title and I was not disappointed! As far as darker Victorian-style fantasy goes this is an excellent read. Apparently this is the first novel in an historical fantasy trilogy and it sets the foundations well. I can't wait for the rest."
— Cliff (5/5)
Fun Summer Read! Fantasy for everyone!
"I am loving this story. It isn’t an unfamiliar idea but the Victorian setting gives it a sense of something written long ago. I am not sure how it it will end but it is an exciting read. Oh and I bought the audio book on audible. The narrator doesn’t do all the voices exactly as I imagine but he has done a wonderful job capturing the essence of the characters."
— Bill (5/5)
I LOVE MARLOW
"I picked this book up randomly off one of the display tables. The cover caught my eye and thought to give it a chance. Started off slow but then I fell in love with little Marlow. Marlow is literally the best written character. I literally kept reading it for him. The premise of the book itself is not new, but really are the characters that make this book compelling. Looking forward to reading the next one. Because of the slow start, it took me about a month to read but after about page 150 I finished it in 2 days. Give it a chance if you're on the fence about it!"

Great read
"Starts slow but very well detailed pulling you in for more."
— Kitty (5/5)
More complex than I thought
"This one won’t be for everyone — it’s dense and wordy with a lot of characters and a lot of side plots. I was completely immersed, though, and the book was delectable in its creepiness."
— Laisea (5/5)
