Not good

"Very hard book to read. My kids aren’t interested at all."

Melissa (1/5)

A cute book about a girl with sharp teeth and a good heart

"Such a great book about the cost of revenge, and being true to oneself"

Tanya (5/5)

Half-Human, Half-Shark Character

"As an early childhood educator, I’ve noticed that preschoolers are absolutely captivated by this book. The concept of a character who is half-human and half-shark immediately grabs their attention and sparks their imagination. Children are naturally drawn to stories that blend fantasy with relatable human experiences, and this story provides just that. The narrative not only entertains but also encourages curiosity about the ocean and marine life. The vivid illustrations keep young readers engaged, while the storyline promotes themes of acceptance, courage, and embracing differences. Additionally, the book opens up opportunities for meaningful discussions about diversity and imagination, which helps children explore empathy and creativity. Overall, this book is an excellent addition to any preschool classroom or home library. It’s a wonderful way to introduce young children to the wonders of the ocean while encouraging them to think beyond the ordinary."

A New York Public Library and Bank Street Best Book of the Year

★"Themes of conservation and workers’ rights sit comfortably alongside a story about being accepting and finding strength in community in this gleefully biting fable." -Booklist, starred review

★"A relevant and redemptive tale of hope in the darkest of times, with gregarious graphics to satisfy kids and a message to break even the most callous adult’s bitter shell." -School Library Journal, starred review

"Stand aside, little mermaids. The true, pointy-toothed protector of the seas is here!... A scaly new hero sure to save the day—and to endear herself to readers." -Kirkus

"[E]xuberant cartooning from Beaton (King Baby) keeps this cheeky “Little Mermaid” variation swimming to a fish-friendly finale." -Publishers Weekly

"[A] picture of genuine ferocity and appealing silliness. There’s a curriculum bonus here too, as the problem of overfishing is embedded both in the narrative and in the endpapers, perhaps sparking discussion of environmental and marine conservation." -BCCB
