At some point in life, everyone will be forced to face their traumas and make the decision to either heal or keep repeating the same patterns. This book is for anyone shown a way of life that they never knew they could escape. Sometimes we get so comfortable in life that we accept what was handed to us and don't realize there is another way of living. That we can unlearn all the toxic, unhealthy behaviors and patterns engraved in us from an early age. This book is for anyone who yearned for more and were brave enough to step outside their comfort zone. Anyone raised by single mothers, raised around addictions and dysfunction, abandoned by their fathers, became a mother, survived abusive relationships, lost their mother at a young age, experienced more loss, battled their own addictions and mental health, got sober, made a better life for themselves and more. Readers will find something to relate to.
This book is for anyone who is ready to heal and do the work. For anyone who has had enough of their own crap. There is no sugar coating in this book. I write exactly how I felt going through every memory in my past. When I have read anything that I have related to and felt understood, that is what I want people to feel when they read this book. I want people to know that they are not alone. That you can dream about a better future and fight for it. I want people to know that it is possible to turn your life into a beautiful one after many years of darkness. Healing is so beautiful. There are so many valuable resources out there now for healing, which can be tailored to your needs depending on what you went through. If something does not work, can try many other things until you find the right fit. Healing and growing is a lifelong journey and I look forward to seeing what else I can learn from others and hope that I can help others too by sharing my story.

"A story of courage and determination. Karoline has been through so much as a child yet she comes out determined to live a life of sobriety and healing her wounds. Her style of writing kept me engaged and easy to pick up wherever I left off. A must read for anybody who has struggled with addictions themselves or in their family."

Compelling and Relatable
"She Never Stood a Chance is an unflinching personal account of a young woman’s journey from trauma and addiction to healing and authenticity. From a young age, Karoline took on the role of caregiver, tending to younger siblings and keeping up the home; holding things together, even when those around her seemed hell-bent on self-destruction. Through a series of traumatic events, tragic back-to-back losses, and a string of dysfunctional relationships, she found herself repeating the family cycle of addiction as a means of coping with unfathomable pain. Often, she bent to the will of others just to keep the peace. Along the way, she lost sight of who she was and what she wanted; and her ability to trust her own intuition was undermined—broken by lies, gaslighting, and one too many unkept promises. Finally, she reached a breaking point that could have gone two ways: give up/self-destruct; or take the long, difficult, but ultimately rewarding, journey to healing and self-love. Karoline’s memoir is a testament to choosing the latter. Through counselling, various therapies, working the Twelve Steps, and an exploration of her Indigenous roots, she paved a path to recovery. A huge motivation for her recovery was, and still is, her children; wanting to be there for them, so they can have ‘a childhood filled with joy; not one they’ll spend years recovering from’. This is a story about breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma. It’s about learning to set strong boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and becoming the authentic being you are meant to be. Written in an easy, conversational style, like sitting with a friend, listening to her story over a warm cup of coffee. A must read for anyone who is sober-curious, or already on the messy, complicated, yet rewarding, road to recovery. Karoline has done, and continues to do, the necessary work every day. Her story shines a light on the path going forward. A path she is hoping those who read her memoir will follow."

Strength Through Trauma
"One of the best examples of strength and trauma guided by love I have ever read. That fact she shared her story is a testament to how strong a women she is and now knows it. If you think you are stuck and can't get out of a relationship think again."
