A great read!

"I think Ann-Marie MacDonald's blurb says it best: ""An exquisitely etched coming-of-middle-age story. "" Lulu Blake is a 62-year-old actor who begins to forget her lines on stage. She has a long weekend off and hopes to re-energize herself as she travels to Snow Road Station for the wedding of her best friend's son. And over the long weekend, we see Lulu examine her life and her goals as she comes to realizations to what is important to her at this stage of her life. We also see the big and small drama of everyday life as Lulu visits with her best friend, Nan. Her brother Guy and his daughter live next door. Various other wedding guests bring in memories or the potential for new relationships. All done with excellent writing and complex characters."

A masterful example of a novel

"The newest novel by one of my favourite authors is witty and wise, expressed in beautifully lyrical prose. Why is it that I am drawn particularly to Canadian authors? Lulu Blake, a sexy older woman and actress, is assailed by self-doubt after experiencing problems with the demanding role she is to play. She returns home for a short rest and finds, not only herself again, but much needed family and a renewed lifelong friendship with Nan. Set against the background of nature, changing seasons and the maple syrup harvesting, the story is immersive and real. I still imagine I can smell wood smoke and feel crisp sunny days of spring."

Slowing down and taking a new direction

"Small village were my husband has gigs from time to time. I loved the vivid descriptions of the environment, similar to where I grew up and the way Hay explores new directions taken in life."

Snow images life to be discovered; road speaks to choices made; station is a place where you know where you are. .

"""Snow Road Station"" by Elizabeth Hay is a novel with the common characteristics of her earlier other novels: down to earth, close to the locale of her story, and marked by well developed characters. Lulu Blake is easy to walk with and identify with, having a very human life, challenges, flaws, and a few successes. Rather than young people finding themselves, Lulu's story places us in the middle of the later years when most us, if not all of us, have to integrate the accumulated years with what is to come. The question isn't so much who we are, the younger folks, as how do we find acceptance and peace now that our story has entered its closing years. For me, this novel was enjoyable because the geographical location was where I grew up. Hopeful and heart warming, are two words to describe the closing scene. I would recommend this novel to anyone."

Elizabeth Hay captures rural Ontario

"This book is a quick read. The characters are real people with the problems many families face. Set in Ontario, the descriptive passages are vivid and engaging."

Near to home

"Loved the character development and the exquisite description of the land and lifestyle of the area north of the crossroads of Hwys 7 and 38."

Age in Play

"Enjoyed the story very much. Perhaps because two of the main characters are close to my age and I could relate to the demand on the time that is left for happiness and contributions in what life is remaining. Elizabeth Hay does not disappoint."

“At the center of this sensitive novel, set in Ontario in 2008, is Lulu, a middle-aged actress who has returned to the hamlet of her youth for her nephew’s wedding. . . . Hay makes a case for the simplicity of pleasure: ‘All you have to do,” Lulu thinks, “is put yourself in the way of beauty, put yourself into the incredible swing of it.’” —The New Yorker

“A moving novel about ageing and transformation. . . . Snow Road Station amazed me.” —Peterborough Examiner

“Joyous and lyrical, Snow Road Station is an ode to the North, in fact an ode to life itself, and all its possibilities.” —Mary Lawson, bestselling author of A Town Called Solace

Snow Road Station is an exquisitely etched coming-of-middle-age story. With a touch by turns subtle and sensual, Elizabeth Hay explores the surprising differencesand crucial overlapsbetween what we think makes us happy, and what actually does. Along the way, we are drawn imperceptibly into intimacy with characters who reckon with the past in order to remake their ownand perhaps the reader’snotions of what family is.” —Ann-Marie MacDonald, author of the #1 bestselling Fayne

"Like Elizabeth Strout with Olive Kitteridge and Lucy Barton, Hay has created a fictional world to which she returns, to great effect. Both His Whole Life and Snow Road Station stand on their own, but there’s real pleasure in reading them consecutively and re-encountering the characters at later stages of their lives—and in different lights.” —The Literary Review of Canada

"In this charming, engaging and eloquent novel, Lulu takes centre stage. . . . Like all of Hay's previous novels, Snow Road Station is a gift to be cherished." —Winnipeg Free Press
