Tries to be edgy, falls utterly flat

"I gave up halfway through admittedly -- but doubt I'm missing much, as I gave up due to the unpolished writing style, juvenile narratorial voice, and one-dimensional characters. The main love interest is a flat manic pixie dream girl, the narrator/protagonist is crude and unlikeable (and not in a compelling way), and frankly the meandering style of story-telling (what little plot there is was very predictable) gave me a headache. Additionally, the whole time it felt like the author is looking over his shoulder going ""see what I did there?"" -- and that's just not a good look. I have trudged through some absolutely terrible books in my life, but couldn't force myself to finish this one."

"I have ADHD so it’s hard for me to finish anything, especially a book. I recently got into reading because I realized it’s been the void that I needed to fill in my whole life. I was so hooked into it! I could not put the book down. Definitely will read again. I’m looking forward to what Bobby will bring to the table in the future."

"The writing style felt like i was reading a highschooler's first draft of their intro to creative writing class. The I also predicted the ending less than 50 pages in. It read like fight club fan fiction."

Fantastic read

"I rarely (if ever) write reviews. However, I was compelled to do so. This is a fantastic debut novel for a new, young writer. Although some reviews knock him for being too similar to 'Fight Club' (which is a fair assessment), it doesn't take away from the quality of the authors' storytelling. He kept me interested all-throughout, I was unable to put the book down (especially through the later chapters). I even stayed up after we put our kids to sleep to cram in as much reading as I could. My one piece of advice is not to necessarily search for the punchlines before they arrive (because in all honesty, it's pretty easy to see them coming), but rather to just enjoy the literary journey that Bobby takes you, the reader, through. If you do that, I promise you'll be glad you picked it up and gave it a chance. Looking forward to the next one! P. S. - The soundtrack to the book is dope, too. (check it out on youtube)"

High Hopes

"I tried to love this, I really did. I enjoyed the first few chapters and then it got repetitive and the story started to resemble Fight Club too closely. So closely, that I had the twists figured out 1/4 of a way through the book. I think Bobby Hall could be a great story teller, he just needs a more original idea instead of piggy backing off Fight Club."

If Jerod Leto wrote a book, this would be it.

"I’m reading this for a book club and I am suffering. So many bad analogies. So many attempted ~edgy~ moments. The main character is a loser who likes “girls with blonde hair and big t*ts” and that’s about as much depth as he has. If you could empathize with Jerod Leto when he was working on the set of Suicide Squad, you’ll love this book. If you’re an actual human who enjoys well-written fiction with layered characters who have interesting things to say, steer clear!"
