“I’ll be forever changed by Dr. Eger’s story…The Choice is a reminder of what courage looks like in the worst of times and that we all have the ability to pay attention to what we’ve lost, or to pay attention to what we still have.”—Oprah
“Dr. Eger’s life reveals our capacity to transcend even the greatest of horrors and to use that suffering for the benefit of others. She has found true freedom and forgiveness and shows us how we can as well.” —Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate
“Dr. Edith Eva Eger is my kind of hero. She survived unspeakable horrors and brutality; but rather than let her painful past destroy her, she chose to transform it into a powerful gift—one she uses to help others heal.” —Jeannette Walls, New York Times bestselling author of The Glass Castle
Winner of the National Jewish Book Award and Christopher Award
At the age of sixteen, Edith Eger was sent to Auschwitz. Hours after her parents were killed, Nazi officer Dr. Josef Mengele, forced Edie to dance for his amusement and her survival. Edie was pulled from a pile of corpses when the American troops liberated the camps in 1945.
Edie spent decades struggling with flashbacks and survivor’s guilt, determined to stay silent and hide from the past. Thirty-five years after the war ended, she returned to Auschwitz and was finally able to fully heal and forgive the one person she’d been unable to forgive—herself.
Edie weaves her remarkable personal journey with the moving stories of those she has helped heal. She explores how we can be imprisoned in our own minds and shows us how to find the key to freedom. The Choice is a life-changing book that will provide hope and comfort to generations of readers.

"This is an exceptional book. As a clinical counsellor I particularly valued the way Dr Eger weaved together both her personal story and professional work as a therapist. She is a remarkable inspiration and embodies the very essence of resilience, offering all of us key examples and tools in how to increase our own resilience. I will be recommending it as a must read for my student counsellors in training."

A memoir for the ages.
"The book shows what true courage looks like during one of the most devastating and tragic times in one’s life. It transcends times and allows one to feel the true devastation that individuals experienced during this time, but also the hope and joy that still existed. It is a must read for sure."
— Natalie L. (5/5)

The essence of how to help ourselves.
"The CHOICE for each of us is clearly to either allow our past traumas to keep us imprisoned OR to use our past traumas as a springboard to embrace what is possible now. The choices we have made in the past are not important; it is the choices that we make now that will determine our future. When our enabling interferes with others ability to help themselves we are crippling them instead of helping them."
— Jane (5/5)
Insightful, powerful
"Wonderful book to help you remember (or learn) how to perceive reality through a powerful new lens. Incredible psychological insights into trauma from a person who has seen the worst and found a path to heal and prosper."
— Chuck B. (5/5)
A life is made by living all of it
"This is such a beautiful and real story. She remembers things about her childhood and relationships with her parents and siblings that are relatable. And she relays stories of horrors in a way that shows you how there is always that common humanness that percolates through. She didn’t survive and suddenly use psychology to rise above… It took time, recognition, and willingness to sort through the reactions, blame, mistakes, and insights that accumulate and build into something meaningful. It is beautiful to see the years and decades that make up a lifetime. Each one counts. It’s very well done, very thought-provoking, insightful and inspiring."
