Observations of a great mind

"A true classic, this book points to problems that still plague our cities today. It is eloquent, witty and scathing. Jacobs makes a dynamic analysis while so many lesser writers think in static terms. In other words, she considers the direct effects of an action and the effects of the effects. Yet, despite her being right for over 60 years, planners seem to be just starting to implement her ideas. _x000D_ Jacobs is also a true democrat and optimist: she believes the people who live in cities are or can be fully fledged citizens, consumers, employees, family members, neighbours and every other role in between. She opposes top-down, undemocratic interventions. She thinks that every little thread in the city tapestry matters, so we should be careful pulling on any of them. This book is filled with her wisdom. Savour it."

Still relevant today

"Sometimes a bit difficult to read, sometimes a little outdated (""Negro slums"" and comparing a mystery to how a gene is expressed), it is mostly still relevant. Of course, there is a part about how the suburbs and cars influence city design, which is still an important issue today. There are also sections that I had not thought about, such as the importance of diversity in the age, architecture, function of adjacent buildings that creates a vibrate neighbourhood. Anyone interested in urban planning should read this classic."

"really enjoyed this"

Thought provoking

"Some parts are a difficult read; some parts are page turners. . . but it is worth the work. You will never look at a city the same way again. Not all of her theories pan out, but they are all worth thinking about."

“Refreshing, provocative, stimulating and exciting . . . It fairly crackles with bright honesty and common sense.”—The New York Times

“One of the most remarkable books ever written about the city . . . a primary work. The research apparatus is not pretentious—it is the eye and the heart—but it has given us a magnificent study of what gives life and spirit to the city.”—William H. Whyte, author of City: Rediscovering the Center

Jane Jacobs (1916–2006) was a writer and activist who championed new approaches to urban planning for more than forty years. Her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, became perhaps the most influential American text about the inner workings and failings of cities, inspiring generations of urban planners and activists. Her efforts to stop the building of downtown expressways and protect local neighborhoods invigorated community-based urban activism and helped end Parks Commissioner Robert Moses’ reign of power in New York City.
