Top Favourite Fantasy Reads!

"R. F Kuang is an incredible storyteller. The plot and characters were so engaging. The ties to Chinese mythology and historical events added so much depth to the story. I absolutely recommend this book! I couldn’t put it down. It’s definitely made the all time favourite fantasy reads list."

Zoie (5/5)

good read

"This book had been sitting on my good reads shelf and I am so happy I got around to reading it. I will throw out a word a caution as the second half of the book has massive triggers. The book follows Fang Runin (Rin) and Orphan being raised by a family who really did not want her. To escape her life she enrolls in the military academy in the north, where there too she has to fight for acceptance"

Jennreads (4/5)

Literally life changing read

"I didn’t know what to expect when I got into this, it was recommended by a friend as a ROMANCE. I found this book really well written, I loved all the characters, I found this to be a really gruesome deception of war, and I don’t think I could ever go back to YA romances after this!"

Janhavi (5/5)

Amazing first book of a series!

"R. F. Kuang’s The Poppy War is a gripping fantasy that melds fierce warfare with deep, cultural mythology. Following Rin, a determined orphan who rises from poverty to a military academy, the novel explores themes of power, trauma, and destiny. Kuang’s vivid world-building and complex characters make for an unforgettable read."

Love

"I loved it. It was a great read with a very strong female lead."

Ravj (4/5)

Overhyped

"The protagonist was constantly throwing tantrums and getting her way while facing no consequences for her actions which became increasingly frustrating. However I did enjoy how eastern history was incorporated into the book and the magic system was interesting. Reading it from the protagonists perspective was annoying though. Overall, I think it is a very interesting idea but executed poorly and I think the amount of hype there is around the book had my expectations too high before I started"

Florence (2/5)

Devastatingly beautiful

"This book is so devastating and so well written. I have almost never read a book quite like this one, definitely worth the read but also be wary of any content warnings"

Megan (5/5)

Under-developed plot and characters, with an unexpected turn into the horrifying at the end

"Other people will enjoy this more than I did. I always felt like it was on the edge of being really good, without quite getting there. The characters and plots seemed to need a bit more depth to be believable, but I often do have trouble connecting with books that are aimed more at the Young Adult market than the Adult market. This seemed to be such a book, so it may be just me. The author incorporates real events from The Rape of Nanking into this book, which was kind of horrible because those events were so much worse than anything else that had happened in the novel. I felt like I got ambushed by a really grotesque story I hadn't signed up for, with very little warning that anything like that would be described. Given it's based on real history, it was valid, I guess? But I didn't enjoy it."

JJ D. (3/5)

Strong Book

"Have had a great difficulty in finding a new strong fantasy novel, but this book did it. With the 100's of fantasy books I have read, and some of them have been good, this one rates great."

Epic Battles and Badassery in The Poppy War!

"OMG, The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang is an absolute masterpiece and my latest obsession! 😍 If you love fantasy books with a fierce heroine, epic battles, and a dash of magic, you need to pick up this book ASAP! Rin is the ultimate badass, starting as an underdog and rising to the top with pure determination and grit. 💪 From her journey at the military academy to becoming a powerful force in a brutal war, I was totally rooting for her the whole time. She's tough, real, and super relatable in her struggles and triumphs. 🙌 The world-building in this book is just WOW! 🤯 The story is set in a war-torn land with deep cultural roots, and it's packed with political intrigue, action, and magical elements that are seriously mind-blowing. 🌌 The battles are intense, and the stakes are sky-high. It's impossible not to get sucked into this world and feel all the emotions! The Poppy War isn't afraid to tackle some heavy themes, but it's done in a way that feels honest and compelling. It's raw, gritty, and totally unputdownable. If you're into complex characters, intense plot twists, and epic fantasy, this book is a must-read! 📚✨ 5/5 stars—R. F. Kuang has crafted a story that's unforgettable and seriously addictive. Get ready for a wild ride!"
