Plants and flowers may grow with abandon in nature, but gardening is no easy task. In this book about learning from failure, one family discovers what it takes to care for many kinds of plants. Four children want to see a small potted fern grow; they water it, give it plenty of sun, and even talk to it. Before long, however, the fern perishes owing to its less than ideal conditions. The children turn to the library and read as much as they can about what ferns need to thrive. They try again with a second fern, and they do much better, adding more plants until their garden grows so vast that it needs to be moved outside. Readers will learn a great deal about gardens, from seeds to pollinators to soil dwellers. Even when it is hard or when things do not go as the children would like, they persevere in the face of adversity. Pastel-colored images evoke spring, bringing the garden to vibrant life. VERDICT Elementary school students learning about gardens and the importance of persistence will enjoy this story.

Gardening; where you eat the fruits of your labours

"Wonderful book on taking the steps to garden. Not always easy, and failure is possible, but completely hopeful for the adventure of growing plants in a garden for yourself and natures friends."

Donna G. (5/5)

My kids loved it!

"We Are the Gardeners was such a fun read! It begins with the story of a well-loved fern, and tells the tale of a beautiful garden and the children who grew it. Come along with the Gaines family as they share their gardening journey. Learn about the critters who help the garden grow-- and those who eat it! My kids and I loved the gorgeous illustrations and fun storyline, and we think you will too! This is a book we will definitely be adding to our library. *I was provided a complimentary copy from NetGalley and the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own."

Wow!

"I love this book. Not only are my great nieces and nephews getting copies, but I've already sent out recommendations to friends with children and grandchildren. This book has a great story, beautiful illustrations, words of encouragement, and a reason to garden. Seriously, check it out."
