"Kate Reading’s narration in this novel is superb.... The life she brings into the already outstanding Lady Trent is phenomenal."—The Sound of Fantasy

“Her Ladyship is a determined and canny woman in search of dragons--I wholeheartedly approve!” —Melanie Rawn, bestselling author of Touchstone, on A Natural History of Dragons

“Saturated with the joy and urgency of discovery and scientific curiosity.” —Publishers Weekly (Starred Review)

“If you've ever secretly wished dragons were real, this story is for you. Fans of Naomi Novik and Mary Robinette Kowal will especially enjoy this book.” —RT Book Reviews

“Told in the style of a Victorian memoir, courageous, intelligent and determined Isabella's account is colorful, vigorous and absorbing. A sort of Victorian why-what-whodunit embellished by Brennan's singular upgrade of a fantasy bromide and revitalizingly different viewpoint.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Lady Trent is the Jane Goodall of dragonkind, and I'm glad she's finally sharing her story with the world.” —Jim C. Hines, author of Libriomancer

A Natural History of Dragons stands somewhere between Naomi Novik and Elizabeth Peters, but rock-solidly in its own world and on its own terms. Highly recommended.” —Daniel Fox, author of Dragon in Chains

Overall rating: 4.2 / 5 from 20 reviews.

Reviews

I know I’m going to love the rest of this series

"I love the whole academic approach to dragons was interesting and a very good read"

Loomin (4/5)

Recommended

"I like this book because I can relate to the main character. I can tell that Brennan has put careful thought into the “science” of dragons to make them a believable animal in her world."

Kate M. (5/5)

Met my expectations

"Lovely little story, no real surprises but I wasn't looking for any. I'd almost call it a cozy fantasy but as there's some adventure it falls a little outside the definition of that. Looking forward to the rest of the series."

Alex (4/5)

Delightful!

"Loved it! The fact that it was written like a Victorian memoir gave it a very cozy feeling. Very enjoyable, will read the rest of the series!"

Jaime (5/5)

Fun fantasy with a strong voice.

"I ate this one up! Super fun and unique. It felt somehow nostalgic but also like something I've never read before."

Okaylib (4/5)

An amazing book

"This is an amazing book. Loved the characters and the thought that went into the world. Looking forward in reading the rest of the series. I'm just sorry that it took me so long to start it."

"I couldn't finish this novel as it didn't keep me interested."

A Gem

"I'd hoped I would love this book, since I went in a little hesitantly. I'm not much for the memoir style of writing. But wow, was I ever wrong to assume! This was fantastic! Given its memoir style, it's completely unique and though it certainly has some dark moments, it's a great adventure and an overall joy to read! Isabella is simply fantastic. Her enthusiasm is infectious, her curiosity warms your heart, and her sense of humour makes you smile. She is very relatable and I'm so happy to have seen her adventure. The other characters she meets are equally interesting, but she definitely steals the show. There's little by way of concrete plot, since this follows the beginning of Isabella's journey to become Lady Trent. That said, once she begins her expedition, she's embroiled in discoveries and mishaps of all kinds, many of which are accompanied by spectacular drawings. There is so much I could say about this book, but I don't want to spoil anything, and encourage all lovers of adventure and fantasy to pick this hidden gem up and experience it!"

AmyS (5/5)

Amazing book

"This was one of those books that I first picked up and literally judged it by its cover. I was so intrigued by the cover and after reading what it was about, decided to give it a go. It really did not disappoint. Not quite like epic fantasy that I usually read, this book is really captures the feel of the Victorian era, and Marie Brennan’s writing is wonderful"

Eric (5/5)

Absolutely wonderful!

"This is the first fantasy series I have gotten into in a very long time. I read it with a male friend of mine and while he was worried it would be to ""girly"" he was surprised how much he enjoyed it. It was really good to also start conversations about women in science and the attitudes there since they have changed through out the years as much as they should and this book takes place in a semi Victorian-inspired time period. Overall, I would highly recommend."
