Excerpt from An Alphabetical List of the Feasts and Holidays of the Hindus and Muhammadans
The present manual has been prepared with the object of meeting a long-felt want. We who live in India are often in doubt or ignorance as to the exact significance or incidence of the various Hindu and Musulman festi vals, many of which are observed throughout the country as public holidays. This circumstance led me to think that a small hand-book containing a brief account of the leading feasts and festivals of the followers of these two great religions, together with an indication of the period in which they fall, would be of utility to all who are engaged in the administration of the country, and perhaps also of interest to a larger public outside.
