An Unforgettable Saga of Medieval Japan

"Asayi" is an unforgettable saga that captures the essence of medieval Japan while addressing themes of identity, resilience, and justice. This book is a must-read for anyone who appreciates historical fiction with profound emotional and cultural depth. Highly recommended!

Feel Medieval Japan

The narrative evokes a sense of Japan, and a feel for the gentle main character. There was no time, that I felt thrown out of the moment. The richness of the text immerses one in the tale.

The narrative deftly weaves together elements of vulnerability and strength, showcasing Asayi's relentless pursuit of justice against a punitive regime.

... each scene is written with such detail that I could easily visualize the location and actions of the characters.

...a must-read for anyone who appreciates historical fiction with profound emotional and cultural depth.

Told from a tender, poignant, breathtaking style of writing, Asayi by Sharon Curcio brings every part of medieval Japan to life. Readers will feel the silk threads of the luxurious kimonos, they'll experience every emotion alongside Asayi as she comes into herself as a woman amid the strife, and their senses will all be engaged as the story unfolds.

Rich in vivid imagery and gorgeous writing, Asayi: An Autistic Teen's Journey to Topple a Shogun in Medieval Japan by Sharon Curcio is a work of art for all readers of fine fiction.

Curcio's masterful storytelling brings to life the visceral reality of political unrest and the constant fight for survival.

Because Sharon Curcio pulls no punches in her descriptions of Asayi's abilities, disabilities, and trials, readers receive a hard-edged, thought-provoking tale immersed in vivid scenarios as Asayi's bids for freedom continually results in threats to her life and wellbeing:

It is interesting to see how Asayi evolves throughout the story from a timid submissive character to one with a stronger will to survive and reclaim her dignity on her own terms.

Sharon Curcio's Asayi is a thoughtful story of a teenage girl's life where two things put her at a significant disadvantage: being female, and autistic. I was drawn to the story because it is the first time I've found a true neuro-divergent protagonist in this period of Japan that isn't part of a supernatural or fantasy novel. I think that Curicio does an excellent job of building the spaces Asayi inhabits, with historical details that have clearly been meticulously researched.
