Reviews

A pleasant surprise

"Easy to read, enjoyed the first half of the book not as interested in the politics section but enjoyed the family moments"

Maureen (4/5)

Self reflection

"A whole new world of looking at your self and reflecting what's right for you"

Preet (5/5)

An Inspiring Read

"This is truly a memoir. Michelle Obama tells the story of her life from childhood through to when she (and her family) left the White House after Barack Obama's second administration. My favourite parts of this book were about Michelle's personal life. That sounds odd but yes, although the whole book is centred around her, there were moments heavily explaining politics in detail. As much as those moments were necessary to include, they were understandably drier to read. I don't know why I thought this book was going to be self-help but I did. I'm actually pleased that it wasn't. However, at the same time her life and what she has done is incredibly inspiring."

Entertaining. Historic. Heartfelt. Inspiring.

"Written in Michelle's authentic voice, her humour, honesty and intelligence leaps off the page as she offers readers insight into her life as a child, a student, wife, mother, and First Lady. It's a perspectives on politics like no other and holds its own as an important historical document as well as inspiring personal testiment of a woman's journey of becoming. Oh, and she brought the word ""pivot"" into the common lexicon, so there's that too."

Joanna (5/5)

Recommended for Girls!

"The book is very encouraging for girls, especially for girls of visible minority. Michelle Obama taught me to think about who I am and what I want, and do not care too much about others' judgements."

ChloeK (5/5)

A fascinating look into former First Lady Michelle Obama’s life

"I normally don’t tend towards biographies but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found it to be well written and it provides a fascinating look into the lives of the Obama family. Michelle Obama comes through as a champion for girls and women while also remaining humble. She feels like she could be your best friend."

“A serious work of candid reflection by a singular figure of early-twenty-first-century America . . . Becoming is refined and forthright, gracefully written and at times laugh-out-loud funny.”—Isabel Wilkerson, The New York Times Book Review

Becoming is inspirational without trying to be. From the first words, the very warmth that permeates its author emanates from the pages. . . . Becoming manages to be a coming-of-age tale, a love story and a family saga all in one. More importantly, this book is a reminder that America is still a work-in-progress, and that hope can be an action word if we allow it to be. Becoming is a balm that America needs, from a woman America does not yet deserve.”—Angie Thomas, Time

“Deeply personal and refreshingly honest . . . She’s thoughtful, humorous, bracingly revealing, and when it’s time, she does us all the favor of showing us the human side of a man worshipped by so many. . . . It’s human and genuine and welcoming to see the layers of humanity she holds open. . . . Michelle Obama’s story can maybe inspire you to find a path for your own story.”—Shonda Rhimes, Shondaland

“A complex, accomplished life recounted with confidence and candor . . . Every page sparkles with directness and grace.”—Douglas Brinkley, The Boston Globe
