From the New York Times bestselling author of Star Wars: Resistance Reborn comes the “engrossing and vibrant” (Tochi Onyebuchi, author of Riot Baby) first book in the Between Earth and Sky trilogy inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas and woven into a tale of celestial prophecies, political intrigue, and forbidden magic.
A god will return When the earth and sky converge Under the black sun
In the holy city of Tova, the winter solstice is usually a time for celebration and renewal, but this year it coincides with a solar eclipse, a rare celestial even proscribed by the Sun Priest as an unbalancing of the world.
Meanwhile, a ship launches from a distant city bound for Tova and set to arrive on the solstice. The captain of the ship, Xiala, is a disgraced Teek whose song can calm the waters around her as easily as it can warp a man’s mind. Her ship carries one passenger. Described as harmless, the passenger, Serapio is a young man, blind, scarred, and cloaked in destiny. As Xiala well knows, when a man is described as harmless, he usually ends up being a villain.
Crafted with unforgettable characters, Rebecca Roanhorse has created a “brilliant world that shows the full panoply of human grace and depravity” (Ken Liu, award-winning author of The Grace of Kings). This epic adventure explores the decadence of power amidst the weight of history and the struggle of individuals swimming against the confines of society and their broken pasts in this “absolutely tremendous” (S.A. Chakraborty, nationally bestselling author of The City of Brass) and most original series debut of the decade.

"A beautifully layered fantasy inspired by Indigenous history and myth Rebecca Roanhorse’s Black Sun is a powerful blend of prophecy, politics, and magic set in a world inspired by Pre-Columbian Americas. The character development is exceptional—Diana and the scrapbook motif especially stood out, adding emotional depth and narrative texture. Roanhorse’s world-building is immersive, with richly described settings and communities that feel authentic and alive. The story weaves intricate perspectives and societal complexities into a compelling, thought-provoking read. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy historical fantasy with diverse cultural foundations and layered storytelling. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for this ARC. This is my honest and unbiased review."

Mesmerizing!
"I love this de-colonized fantasy!! The characters are mesmerizing, and the way Roanhorse writes keeps you wanting to find out what comes next. The book starts off with intensity and it doesn't really wane. I haven't read a book this quickly in a long time!"

Riveting, fascinating, and engaging fantasy
"Black Sun is an utterly riveting fantasy series opener inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas. The story is told through the points of view of four characters who are complex, interesting and well-developed and whose journeys converge. The world building is complicated, lush and fascinating. _x000D_ There is much to engage the reader: giant beasts, sirens, rival gods, intrigue, betrayal, violence, secrets, an ocean voyage, a cliffside city of clans and criminals and an eclipse. Superbly written and perfectly paced, Black Sun is brilliant and impossible to put down."

Into the past
"Absolutely loved this book starts off as seemingly loving then shocking but gets you into the mind set of how ancient pre-Columbian's believed and thought, of how they looked at their world and their deep beliefs and shows how vastly different they thought and lived to what was accepted and normal to them and how we would not even think like that today. It was like being thrown to the past and how they explain why certain natural events occur and what you should do to right them as to what we know now why they occur. I'm having a hard time now to wait for the next book to come out to continue with what happens next and will definitely get the sequel to this book."

I loved this
"If I had to describe this book in one word, it would be: epic. Roanhorse has taken inspiration from the pre-Colombian Americas and crafted an incredibly engaging story. This is a book that puts her on par with the greats of the SFF genre in my opinion. If you love morally grey characters, read this."
