I read this for Tycho and can’t wait for the final

"Book 1 ends with the battle at Briarlock and sees Jax accompanying Tycho to Ironrose Castle and Callyn to The Crystal Palace with the queen. Once again, this continues to be a series full of feeling. In a world where danger comes from ancient creatures and the people, our three MCs must find their purpose and place in this changing world. It is full of political intrigue with the balance between the two nations tipping irrevocably and these young characters faces unexpected challenges. Tycho is the character I read this story for. While all the characters have undone unimaginable horrors, this nature makes him the most compelling. He is that person that is kind, perhaps to a fault. The one that is loyal no matter what, even others don’t deserve his loyalty. The one who will always does what is right even if the cost it to himself. Living in the servitude to others, he wonders if he will ever be more than a pawn, if he will have choices in his own life. I liked where his storyline developed and the continued tension between him and those that are constantly using and admonishing him - yes I would love to punch Grey on his behalf, but I am glad he did it himself. His friendship with Malin and possibly Nakiis also created a little more to his world and I was glad that he wasn’t so lonely. Jax is a fish out of water in his new city. He doesn’t speak the language and the soldiers resent him for his origin. Every day is a risk for him in this new life, and with Tycho sent away again it is a lonely existence. As he begins to grow roots, learning Emberish and having companions he begins to find his own strength. His anger still simmers below the surface, but he is no longer helpless and learns that many live with scars. Yet, the hardest thing to realize may be that Tycho will always leave him. The narrative is complete with Callyn who represents the nuance of the situation. Hers is a perspective within the complex political landscape, that area of vague ambiguity. It is perhaps why I want to shake her the most and tell her to be smarter and not fall for the same tricks. I can’t tell if she is supposed to be intentionally naive, or if it is the result of the slippery Alex and this silver tongue. I did find her position to be the most farfetched. That she would be brought to the palace despite her role with the Truthbringers, be allowed to talk openly with one of them, and become a confident for the queen. She just didn’t seem enough - clever enough for subterfuge, brave enough to make a stand, honest enough to inspire trust. I don’t think she made a good spy seeing as she had no discernment or ability not to repeat her past errors, and she did seemingly little caregiving, the role she was supposedly brought to the palace for. I liked Callyn the baker and warrior sister, but this version didn’t quite track. This is the weakest third of the story for me and the most unlikeable of the three MCs, though I suspect it will be important in the future with both war and magic blooming. I am very much looking forward to the conclusion of this story and must once again commend Kemmerer on her ability to write such absorbing worlds and characters."
