The original settlement of Cambridge was founded on the banks of the River Granta (later Cam) and the river is still an integral part of the city. The first college of the University of Cambridge was founded in 1209 and its history is intertwined with the city, giving it a rich architectural heritage as well as world-famous landscapes such as the Backs and natural spaces such as the Botanic Gardens. Royalty has been associated with Cambridge and the university from its earliest years, many scientific discoveries took place there and today the city is associated too with music, from Kings College Chapel to the Cambridge Folk Festival as well as being a hotbed of acting and comedy through the Footlights. The women’s suffrage movement is also associated with Cambridge, with Millicent Fawcett as the co-founder of Newham college. Fairs and markets have been held from mediaeval times to the present, and today Cambridge is hub of the country’s high-tech industry.
Celebrating Cambridge chronicles the proud heritage of Cambridge, its important moments and what draws so many to this dynamic city today. Illustrated throughout, this fascinating book offers a refreshingly positive insight into Cambridge’s rich heritage, its special events and important moments. Celebrating Cambridge will be a valuable contribution to the history of the city and provide a source of many memories to those who have known it well over the years.
