“What begins as a decorous whodunit set in a gated community on the River Thames turns out to be another metafictional romp for mystery writer Anthony Horowitz and his frequent collaborator, ex–DI Daniel Hawthorne. . . .Gloriously artificial, improbable, and ingenious. Fans . . . will rejoice.” - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"An absolutely engrossing tale . . . written with the abundance of whimsy and dark humor that seems to permeate nearly everything that Horowitz creates. Kudos to anyone who can figure this one out!" —Booklist (starred review)

Horowitz

"First rate mystery writer. His television series Foyle's War is great too."

Interesting Detective

"This is the second Anthony Horowitz book I have read. The first introduced the reader to Detective Daniel Hawthorne. I read this book out of order in the series but I do not think it mattered. This was a good mystery and I liked this book better because the author didn't insert himself into the plot as much as in the first book. The characters were neighbours in a gated community called a close. One of them is murdered but who is the culprit? Horowitz takes us with the detective as he discovers the characters backgrounds, their relations with the corpse and their alibis at the time of the murder. That way we can come to our own conclusions. I really appreciated that as it made the mystery more interesting to me."

Horowitz Nails It Again!

"I bought the entire series for my mom. We adore Anthony Horowitz and everything he writes. I personally havent read them yet but I will for sure. I actually stumbled upon his books in the Indigo location closest to my house when looking for a mothers day present and saw his name on the cover which I recognized from a show he wrote called Foyle's War - Mom and I watched it hungrily as its one of the best WW2 era Murder Mysteries Ive ever seen. Anywho, you'll love his writing, I can guarantee it!"

Good title

"The Hawthorne/ Horowitz partnership series has been my favourite from the author and his latest, Close to Death is likely my favourite…there is a great set up with all the parties involved plus an unusual twist between the hero and the author…I would highly recommend it!!"

Close to Death!

"So. . . Anthony Horowitz. . . celebrated author whose works have been adapted for Masterpiece (PBS) and long time ""go to"" for adapting for television the works of Agatha Christie never fails to demonstrate his keen mind and skills in ""spinning an evocative narrative"". This book is no exception!"

Chickey (5/5)

Read it in four days—can't wait for the next one!

"The series continues to find ways to put a fresh spin on tried-and-true mystery conventions—these novels remain fun, light, and engaging. I have trouble putting them down once I start."

Benji (5/5)

Disappointed.

"I generally enjoy Horowitz's books but here after about 190 pgs, her interrupts the flow of the mystery when he inserts himself as a new character . Stopped the plot in its tracks only to resume later on. Disappointing. Surprised his editors allowed it"

Paul (2/5)

Only the best

"What can I say. . . another great Anthony Horowitz mystery. Almost finished it and still have know idea who did it."

Catherine (4/5)

The 5th in the series - the story line is getting old

"As the 5th book in his series - it has the same format and style as the previous four books. The book has its twists and turns and unexpected parts. Trying to figure out the killer is difficult as the clues are subtle. What I found that the best part of the book was the map on the first page as it allowed me to feel I was part of the little community where the murder occurred. But, I would suggest that the series of the books are getting stale - the 1st book was the best and it has gone a bit downhill since."

Mystery R. (4/5)

Always a great read!

"Anthony Horowitz never disappoints. Completely in love with Daniel Hawthorne. The only problem is having to wait for the next book!"
