John Henry Cardinal Newman (1801-1890) was an Anglican priest and leader of the Oxford Movement in the Church of England who converted to Roman Catholicism in 1845 and was named cardinal by Leo XIII in 1879. Newman's writings have been recognized widely as a major contribution of his era to the present. His cause for sainthood is currently under consideration by the Roman Catholic Church.
