This Department is endeavoring to increase the value of the information relating to the commercial and manufacturing interests of the country, collected through its consular service, by the publication of advance sheets of the monthly consular reports, giving timely ia formation to trade and commercial papers concerning matters of special interest to their readers. Though the Department recognizes the valuable assistance which trade and com merciai papers can render its officers by keeping them informed regarding American ma chinery, tools, and general products, it is not authorized to subscribe for them. It may he remarked, however, that papers sent to consuls will receive careful attention and will help them to enlarge the markets for the goods of those advertising in these journals.
