The perfect blend of literature and music.

A Musical Journey

"As someone whose eternal life partner is a huge music snob, who I met at 23, had a glorious year with, and then panicked and ran away, only to be dragged back five years later into his arms; this book is scary in its depth, ambience, and overarching love story that I connected with on a level unprecedented. At points it felt like I was at my own clumsy virgin moment as Percy experiences hers, but also then reminiscing about my own first experiences with betrayal, heartbreak, and the curse of being young and stupid. Only to then be brought back around and reminded that we all must hurt to grow, and we cannot truly appreciate what we have until we have lost it for a time… and all the while the music plays. Holly Brickley has infused herself into this book. She’s shown extreme snobbery in music (I know as we’re of the same generation, and even my snobby music obsessed husband didn’t know every reference to every obscure NYC band!!); and put it on the page in such a way that it bleeds hipster hype infused with indie irreverence. All things that are seemingly unable to exist at once, and yet do both in the story and in real life. I didn’t love this at a couple key moments, which is why even with its strong ending I feel compelled (for now) to keep it at four stars. I know some of the moments that I felt slogged were intentional; as our leading gal, Percy, is also feeling that way. Thankfully it doesn’t last too long and I was easily brought about and delving back into the lyrics on the page. If you love The Star is Born (original with Heston or remake with the stunning Lady Gaga) then you are likely to love this. I’m not usually one for the romantic contemporary story but occasionally one gets me and Deep Cuts won the battle to bring my cold black heart out for a time. Music is an amazing, moving, gloriously unique art medium and somehow Brickley manages to have you hearing the songs by just reading the words on the page. A truly amazing feat. Thanks to Brickley for being born in a small town in Canada so this read helps me meet my Canadian author quota for the year, and to a number of challenges that brought this book to the top of my TBR. I might have avoided for a lot longer without these two factors. I’m pleased to read a love story that isn’t about perfect people or moments; but is instead messy; filled with anguish, desire, and yearning, just like real life. Thankfully today I’m past the age of these characters and settled into my amazing life with my husband. Deep Cuts is a brilliant reminder of where we all have came from and to remember to appreciate every shining moment of our love and lives. I’m so rarely overly sentimental or introspective about my own life; but Brickley strung a chord that I can’t ignore. Do not miss this musical journey."

Excited to read

"I have had this book in my Tbr forever excited to read it"

Deep Cuts didn't """"Cut"""" it for me

"When I first heard about this book, I couldn't wait to read it. I checked the reviews and they were great and I was excited that it was so musically driven, so I went out and bought it that same day. Boy was I disappointed. It was well written, but in my opinion, the plot was very weak and there was so much randomness that served very little purpose and didn't hold my interest. The author failed to evoke any emotion in me when the characters continued to hurt one another and were unable to solidify their relationship. I could not get invested in them at all. Many of the reviews I read talked about all the """"popular music"""" in the book and I really don't get it. I've been obsessed with popular music for my entire life, but this book was filled with music that I felt was obscure, with rambling analysis of songs I either didn't know or didn't like. If it had truly been """"Popular"""" music, I know it would have held my interest because I thrive on that. By page 125, I considered not even finishing it, but I persevered. The book wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either in my opinion. Deep Cuts just didn't """"cut"""" it for me."

Interesting but not hooked

"I enjoyed this as a period piece for early 2000s and all the musical references. Didn’t feel a connection to the characters though."

Normal People vibes in the 2000s music world!

"Loved this book so much! So excited for the movie adaptation with Saoirse Ronan!"

Erica L. (5/5)

Deep Cuts. Brilliance, diamond-like

"Absolutely awesome in all ways. The musicology is wildly on track with the music and social themes of this century. Characters are relatable, imperfect and wonderful."

AN INSTANT CANADIAN BESTSELLER

"This dazzling debut isn’t so much a 'will they/won’t they' story as it is a 'should they?' With an assured, conversational tone, appealing characters, and an emotionally resonant love story, this one is sure to win the hearts of many readers."—Booklist, starred review

"A promising debut notable for sharp characterizations and a vividly conveyed sense of time and place."—Kirkus Reviews

"A refreshing story of love and ambition. . . . Brickley’s sharp commentary on aughts indie rock will please music fans, but what makes this special is her portrayal of how Joe and Percy are bound by their creative drive even more than by romantic love. It’s a banger." —Publishers Weekly

"This is rich, immersive, and transportive storytelling, full of Walkmans and CD folders, love and yearnings (oh, is there yearning), and exceptional music writing. Songs and lyrics become charged with meaning as the characters use music to understand themselves and each other, and the result is breathtaking. Can you tell I’m obsessed? I really think this is going to be huge."—The Bookseller

Moving, beautiful, rich with emotion, it’s an epic love story and the story of a woman finding her creative power, all rolled into one. Extraordinary.” —Beth O’Leary, Sunday Times bestselling author of The Flatshare and The Switch

"Every writer knows the highest compliment is envy: I wish I'd written that. Holly Brickley's Deep Cuts is a joy: fizzy, moving, endlessly smart. Brickley doesn't just write well about music, she anatomizes why and how we love it, and she makes us feel the stakes of that love. So, I wish I'd written that." Claire Dederer, national bestselling author of Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

"Smart, sensitive and assured, Deep Cuts tells us as much about the hearts of its music-loving characters as it does about music's power to distill overwhelming feelings into indelible art. Holly Brickley's wonderful debut novel is every bit as satisfying as the songs she writes about. Brickley is the real thing, and so is Deep Cuts. Peter Ames Carlin, New York Times bestselling author of Bruce and The Name of This Band is R.E.M.

"I find it hard to remember the last time I found a novel so relatable and enjoyable. Prepare to fall in love with Percy and Joe this spring." Gillian McAllister, New York Times bestselling author of Wrong Place, Wrong Time

"Clever, nostalgic and deeply geeky, Deep Cuts is a literary indie-pop classic—brilliantly constructed, with a raw, heartfelt energy that captures an era. There is such a range of music, I ended up listening to so many wonderful, forgotten tracks while reading this." Florence Knapp, bestselling author of The Names

"Holly Brickley’s Deep Cuts is giddy, enchanting debut that’ll leave readers swooning." —The Daily Californian

"Rock novels are historically lame. Or a reboot of the truth. . . . But something brand new, that encompasses the reality and truth of being a music fan? I’m not sure any book exists that nails it as well as Deep Cuts." —Bob Lefsetz, The Lefsetz Letter
