Reviews

Avoid this book. For real. Don’t believe the hype.

"Picked up this book because it is heralded as a sci-fi masterpiece. In reality, it’s an aimless story filled with encounters that minimize underage sexual assault, and hyper sexualize people of colour. These themes are not used as part of the plot, they are frivolous distractions from any meaningful narrative advancement. It is a negative vibe the whole way through. _x000D_ _x000D_ After putting this book down, I found out that the author has been sympathetic to an organization that seeks to normalize the assault of minors. Dhalgren’s harmful narrative choIces seem to echo this fact, and I honestly have no idea how this thing is still in print. _x000D_ _x000D_ Read anything else."

Just bought, will update review when I finish

"Leaving this as 3 stars until I read it, the concept sounds really interesting and I'm very excited to read!"

Risa (3/5)

Awesome!

"I loved this but can't say I ""understood"" . . . one of those books"

Joey (5/5)

Strange but . . .

"great if you can suspend your expectations of what a novel is. Not for everyone."

Fcandeloro (5/5)

Brilliant

"Difficult and dense but ultimately an extremely rewarding read. A highly unusual work of literature that may not be to everyone's taste. There can be no denial as to the skill and talent that went into the writing of this book. Re-readings of this novel will peel open layers of meaning that one was unsure of in previous readings. . ."

Not sure they make many like this.

"While I will freely admit to not fully understanding this book (anyone who says they did is lying to you) I would recommend it."

"A Joycean tour de force of a novel, Dhalgren…stake[s] a better claim than anything published in the country in the last quarter-century (excepting only Gass’s Omensetter’s Luck and Nabokov’s Pale Fire) to a permanent place as one of the enduring monuments of our national literature."–The Libertarian Review
After his seventh novel, Empire Star (1966), Samuel R. Delany began publishing short fiction professionally with “The Star Pit.” It appeared in Worlds of Tomorrow and was turned into a popular two-hour radio play, broadcast annually over WBAI-FM for more than a decade. Two tales, “Aye, and Gomorrah” and “Time Considered as a Helix of Semi-Precious Stones,” won Nebula Awards as the best science fiction short stories, respectively, of 1967 and 1969. Aye, and Gomorrah: And Other Stories contains all the significant short science fiction and fantasy works that Delany published between 1965 and 1988, excepting only those tales in his Return to Nevèrÿon series. A native New Yorker, Delany teaches English and creative writing at Temple University in Philadelphia. In July of 2002, he was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame.
