AI Generated Review Summary

Doctor Sleep, Stephen King's sequel to The Shining, is praised by many for its gripping narrative and powerful paranormal elements. While some find it a worthy follow-up, others feel it falls short of the original's impact. The story of Dan Torrance and Abra Stone's encounter with the True Knot adds a fresh layer to the haunting tale.

Halloween Read

"Excited for the sequel to The Shining. The movie is great, looking forward to a great Halloween read"

Shining on

"Doctor Sleep is a shining sequel to its predecessor. Penning a continuation to one of his greatest novels, over thirty years later no less, was a risky endeavor by King. However, it pays off in so many fantastic ways, and I’m pleased to report I’m already considering what to read next from the Master of Horror. If you’re one of King’s Constant Readers and missed this one, give it a try, as it provides a very satisfying conclusion for Danny Torrance."

Incredible Sequel to the Shining

"This book was shockingly good. It's a sequel to The Shining but really takes a whole new direction. Very cool villain and a fantastic new characters all around. Does not delve into fan service, it very much builds on the first book."

Nice to see what happens to Danny Torrance

"The idea of a grown up Danny Torrance, the kid from ""The Shining"", was interesting. Early in the book, he seems to be headed down the same, alcohol soaked path as his father once was. He discovers how to put his diminishing powers to use in a hospice for the terminally ill: he eases the fears of those at death's door and allows them to pass painlessly. However, he also discovers a band of spirit (they call it 'steam') vampires is hunting down young children who have the shining including an especially powerful teenage girl who lives near Danny. Together, he and the girl must stand up to these creatures lest they continue their murderous ways forever. I didn't find this book to be overly scary, but there were some gruesome moments and details. The 'steam' stealers are quite the collective, led by the mysterious Rose the Hat. They each seem to have their own special power while Rose herself seems to be the most like Danny. I liked how quickly the book's plot moved along, and even the final confrontation was pretty good ( unlike some other King novels). Now that Hollywood has produced an adaptation of this book, maybe I'll spend some money to go see it."

Can't even finish it

"I loved The Shining, and I'm a huge Stephen King fan, but I just feel that this one is a disappointment. I don't think that The Shining needed a sequel, it was just that good. Sometimes it's okay to leave everything on a cliff. We don't always have to know what comes next, and I think that some times that is effective enough. I'm not even that far into it, but I can already tell I've put it down for good. I love his classic novels with all his scary, otherworldly monsters, and this one does not fit into that box for me."

Linnea (2/5)

Amazing

"I wasn't sure about this one when I started. It was hard reading about Danny hitting rock bottom. The story had a supernatural element that I enjoyed and I ended up not being able to put the book down. Not the sequel that was expected to the shining but very King."

Allison (5/5)

Not the Shining

"I could not wait to see where Danny was now. Who he had become, how he had developed as a character. For me, this novel was too far removed from The Shining to be a successful sequel. On its own it stands as a good book, as a sequel, it just did not live up to the mastery of The Shining."

Katie (3/5)

Definitely Recommend it!

"I usually don't like sequels too. . . much but this one was an exception! I'm really glad I decided to buy it"

Angelica (5/5)

great book

"excellent plot and one of my favs of him"

Stephanie (3/5)

Decent ""sequel"" story

"I found that Doctor Sleep provides a perfect extension to Danny's character from The Shining. It certainly answers the question of what happens to the Torrance family after the winter they spent at the Overlook. Although the book has an all too predictable conclusion, the last chapter (including the author's note) really wraps up all possible loose ends. Overall, I was happy with the way that this book ended, and in my opinion it has improved the whole story that began with The Shining."
